I am Dominican and yes of visibly Afro descent, i have traveled to many Latin american countries and have really never experienced the same type of racial hate i have from whites here....
i think your argument of not seeing anyone of Afro descent being "visible" or in the forefront can be said for any population, EVERYWHERE in the world where they has been "white" and "non-white" people there has existed some form of racial discrimination.
KEEP IN MIND THOUGH , am not saying this to justify racial discrimination in Latin america AT ALL but I think a lot people here don't fully understand that the type of racial divide that exist here in America between whites and non whites is completely different than what happens in Latin american countries , here in Ameirca its alot more sytematic , diliberate and ingrained into the culutre, and of course its going to seem worse in latin ameirca because of the economic situation of many of those countries
Thanks for the response, and i'm very interested in the culture of Latin America, especially those of Afro-Descent. But I have to disagree to a certain things, with America, everyone knows there are Black people in this country, regardless of what White folks do. You have countries, where literally people don't know Black people exist, till they see their Soccer team. For a person who is not of Latin America background, you would think only Andy Garcia, and J-LO exist from what we get from the Latin media, both in America and in Latin America.
From an outsider, I have to say that the brand off cism in Latin America, while not as upfront, is more dangerous, and harmful to people of color, especially those of African descent. Because even with all the problems in this country. Blacks have always been able to succeed and create something for themselves and force those in control to deal with them, because they understand what they are dealing with.
