Few Observer notes:
Although the attempt has been to keep this secret, Super Crazy did largely confirm what we’ve pretty much said, and that is that Jado is booking here and New Japan either has a significant financial stake in the company or controlling interest in the company. The story, for obvious reasons, is being kept secret, but the wrestlers have known about it for months in the sense the NOAH guys know New Japan is involved in paying them but nobody knows exactly what the real deal is. Crazy said he was returning here in March and said that he was being booked by New Japan into NOAH, but that he had a good relationship with Jado and will continue to be booked here.
They did something on the 1/23 show in Hiroshima playing off Mitsuharu Misawa’s death that came across pretty low class. Suzuki said: “Hey, Marufuji, Hiroshima is really special to you guys. It doesn’t matter to me.” Hiroshima was where Misawa died, and Marufuji was a protege of Misawa. Every year NOAH holds a Misawa Memorial show in Hiroshima in June.
A.J. Styles has been saying that his neck is no longer an issue. It had bothered him for months after landing on his head from the German superplex from Togi Makabe during the G-1 tournament, but he said he’s feeling great and a lot stronger now.
This is almost hilarious. New Japan World is now offering the month of February free. If you go to the web site and go to the bottom for English, it’ll all come up. You have to have a valid credit card to sign in, and like with WWE, you will need to cancel by 2/27 or you would get billed for March. You actually do get charged (it’s $8.49 per month based on current exchange rates) but will be reimbursed at the end of the month.
It’s been noted that the attendance of younger women fans has exploded at mens’ shows, particularly New Japan, Dragon Gate and DDT events over the past few years. It’s attributed to the top guys being pushed in all three groups being good looking.
Yujiro Takahashi has said he wants the winner of Nakamura vs. Nagata, which should thrill people beyond belief.
While not yet announced, there are talks that the pro wrestling debut of Wanderlei Silva will be on the 2/20 IGF show at the Tokyo Dome City Hall, which is the Antonio Inoki 72nd birthday show. Silva is likely facing Phil Baroni, who has been training for pro wrestling, as noted in last week’s issue, in Las Vegas under Michael Modest. Baroni is scheduled to debut on the show. Silva we haven’t heard confirmed, and there is the aspect of his UFC contract. UFC allowed Josh Barnett to do IGF and Silva is probably never fighting for them again. But there is the bad blood between the two sides in the sense I can also see UFC not wanting to do him any favors, but since they can’t use him anyway, there’s no point in keeping him from making money doing a pro wrestling match in Japan. I don’t know what Silva knows about pro wrestling, but Baroni was a childhood fan who has talked about doing it for years. Frontrow Brian was the first to report on a Baroni match. There was an incident years ago, stemming I think from a Mark Coleman vs. Shogun Rua fight which saw both corners empty and nearly go at it with Baroni and Silva squaring off, so that would be the “grudge” aspect the fight is being sold on.
