Something interesting I've noticed in 1980 at least in Japan is that NWA Championship matches started phasing out 2/3 falls matches, leading to Harley matches all being 15-20 minute sprints (I mean, match structure wise, physically Harley probably has never even approached "sprinting" speed since he was a child) that are basically nothing but high spots which is interesting. His return match with Baba for the title in 1980 starts with a piledriver :mjlol:

It works a lot better with someone like Mil Mascaras than Baba due to the athletic aspect, but also for some reason Harley vs Mil has chairs, blood, tables, multiple dives, and ends with them having a chair duel in the crowd.

I remember when I first started reading other wrestling boards with tape traders and dudes that had seen really old wrestling, Harley used to get shytted on for working that way, and specially his use of the piledriver. I even remember reading one debate about Harley being the "original Kurt Angle", I think it was either on WrestlingClassics or PWO.

I'm sure @TrueEpic08 or other shoot style fans from here can give you a better answer but even though MiSu was the smallest of the group. Guys like Fujiwara (his trainer), Masakatsu Funaki or Daisuke Ikeda were never that much bigger than Suzuki :dame:

edit: unless Karl Gotch trained him for an extended period of time :patrice:

Yeah I've read shyt about Harley getting labeled as a spot monkey by the proto smarks and always thought it was pretty silly because how slow and plodding he is physically, but his style in 1 fall matches around 1980....I can get the argument more now. Then again, every new top guy through the generations seems to get that label regardless. It's not like he was the only guy working like that, the overall working style was changing all over the world I would think shaped in large part by TV and stations (in Japan and the US, presumably in Mexico as well) not wanting 50 minute matches with 45 minutes of holds anymore.

his style is one you see usually the smaller wrestlers use who have to work w bigger guys......an aggressive style in terms of movement to tire out the bigger guy but not really shooting unless you see them make a mistake or be off balance so you don't have to exert yourself grappling w the bigger guy for no reason.

edit could it be him being apprehensive about the other guys striking :patrice: idk im about to look around online and see if I find anything.

Side note but every time I go back to watch some pancrase stuff I love the aesthetic of the thai pads and trunks :dame: although they could have went w shorts tho :dame: now a days all the playfighters rock thai pads im guessing for the sound effect when they kick each others chest and shyt meanwhile suzuki tossed them shyts in the bushes his shyts are probably like a fukking tree. My son thai coach is all calcified :picard: could imagine what suzuki shyt like :picard: shin to shin hitting is one of the top 5 WOAT feelings. :to:
