Kross :leon:Thought he would be busy winding down before he leaves Impact :ehh:

LA PARK might be one of my favourite old heads still doing it. :blessed:

Edit: Konnan finessed his way into this as well? :mjlol:

I've finally finished the 1970s of the All Japan Archive. Only took me idk 2-3 years :mjlol: I logged all the matches and rated them on a scale of Skippable, Skippable but interesting, Recommended, Highly Recommended.

The wrestler with the most Highly Recommended matches: At 27 highly recommended matches, Jumbo Tsuruta. Not much of a surprise, really.

Baba comes in 2nd with 17, however that's also not a big surprise as most of those matches involve Jumbo either in tags or their singles matches against each other.

What perhaps is a bit surprising is that Dory Funk Jr. has more highly recommended matches than Terry Funk (14 to 12). I would certainly say Terry is the most captivating performer even if he doesn't have the highest number of highly recommended matches.

The four of them, Baba, Jumbo, and the Funks, are certainly the top 4 guys in the company for the decade and they carried the decade in high quality matches, often against each other.

Once you get past that group, the next highest amount is....4. That's held by Nick Bockwinkel, Jack Brisco, and Kim Duk.

Combining highly recommended and recommend matches, Jumbo still is the highest rated guy with 73 matches on the list. Baba comes in second at 49 total recommended matches. The Funk Brothers even out both ending up with 21 recommended matches.

A closer breakdown shows that Jumbo has 73 matches out of 125 (or 58.4%) recommended.

Baba has 49 out of 109 matches (46.23%) recommended.

Dory Funk Jr. has 21 out of 27 matches (77.78%) recommended.

Terry Funk has 21 out of 23 matches (91.3%) recommended.

Bockwinkel actually has a 100% recommendation rate, but he also only has 6 matches.

I don't have the links. I don't know where the AJ Archive exists anymore outside of torrents. I know there was a google drive for a while but that got shut down, then they moved it to facebook and that's changed 2 or 3 times. I have some of them uploaded on youtube myself but I can't remember how deep I got into uploading them before I stopped. It's been probably over a year since I uploaded any of them. Eventually my plan is to go through the whole thing (up to 2000) and then post the whole spreadsheet and links but that will likely take years before I actually get through it.

I think most of those up through 1976 will pop up on youtube on one of my accounts

I'm shocked you don't have Funk vs Abby/Sheik 77 RWTL, were God gives one of the GOAT performances :wow: what did it lack to you?

I dunno. I have it on the rec list, but not highly recommended, but other Funks vs Abby/Sheik matches on highly rec. It's been probably over a year since I watched it so I couldn't tell you what I was thinking at the time. Could have been tired or bored that day.

I gotta say as much as I love the old school slow maybe boring 70s NWA/AJPW style, I'm really looking forward to Choshu coming in and livening up the joint with hateful tags.

EDIT: The frequency with which Terry Funk would take insane over the top/through the ropes bumps or falling off the apron bumps is staggering.

1980 is a buffet of Funker matches :blessed:

:deadmanny: at the Funk/Slater team when Funk starts doing his swag shuffle and dikk Slater is always right there like Mini Me

:blessed: when Baba from time to time boots the shyt out of someone

:hubie:how until he becomes a grumpy old fukk who tortures Kikuchi, Jumbo hits Baba at least 2x harder than anyone else he's in the ring with.

I think dikk Murdoch is better as a fiery face than stoogey heel.

There's a match in early 1980 where Jumbo completely destroys Brody's aura by completely manhandling him on the mat and at one point deadlifts him in a belly to back and just walks around with him like Brody is a child :mjlol:

I love how even the most hated guy can be 100% face for a night depending on the opponent. dikk Murdoch is an example from earlier who against Jumbo and Baba is a grindy/stoogy heel, but against Abdullah is a fired up babyface with the crowd chanting his name the whole match. And then Abdullah is the big monster trying to murder everyone, but put him against Sheik and he's in the middle of the ring soaking in the cheers as the crowd treats him like Terry. :mjlol:

Speaking of, Terry was such a GAWD he had grown ass women coming to the shows dressed as cheerleaders for him :whoo:
