New Japan announces fan voting for Tokyo Dome main event

After the diverse reactions in Osaka on Saturday, New Japan at a press conference today announced fans will get to vote on which makes is pushed as the main event for the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show, either the IWGP title match with Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito, or the IC title match with Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi.

:leon: Good for them to admit the Naito push wasn't catching on. Although he may still main event I guess.

Damn, it seems they'll have to go the Chono route with Naito (big ass heel turn).

 Yikes. That bad, huh. I know he was getting booed when he and Okada faced off after the last PPV (and why the hell would THAT happen? They've only pushed Okada as a babyface for the last 7 months...), but that's quite extreme, no? They can't even give him a chance?

I think it's booking trying to absolve themselves a bit, I mean they (Gedo and Jado) are responsible at the end of the day and just look at how they've booked him since his return. Damn near all his interactions have been with Tanaka, I like Tanaka but he's not a guy to make his opponent look very strong, and Yujiro,... yeah, and his G-1 was really just there and didn't feel like a big deal. That's down, I think, to their habit of having everyone get an almost equal amount of wins, even booking won't get this guy to main event level. There's a place for splitting wins between people but it doesn't work when trying to get some momentum for a guy.

I'm not a huge fan of his by any means, but I don't think he really had much of a chance to get Dome level over with the booking.

IIRC people were worried about Okada when he challenged Tanahashi the first time too. He came back with a lot of hype and had a very lackluster match in the Dome (just like the year before) and his challenge was received mostly with groans from the crowd.

But that situation was way different. Okada wasn't getting booed, wasn't being booked as a face, wasn't challenging at the Tokyo Dome and he didn't had 5 months to try and win the fans back. Actually he turned things around as soon as he could when he had a VERY good title match, won the belt and showed everyone he could live up to the potential he showed in 09' as a young lion.

I like Naito, I thought he was going to be able to win them back after the G-1 but it just didn't happen. Even if booking didn't do him any favors, they have to change things up with him. Sure, having a MOTY like the one he had with Okada at Korakuen Hall last year could get the fans behind him once again but that seems unlikely considering Dome shows rarely has amazing title matches.

I say go the Chono route. He was also getting booed after he came back from his neck injury and Choshu said fukk it and gave him one of the GOAT puroresu gimmicks. Just turn Naito heel...fukk, it also worked with Nakamura when it seemed he was never going to be able to find a character that could complement his wrestling skills, and he ended up forming CHAOS and becoming Swagamura.

Absolutely this. I would turn Goto along with him and have them go against Okada and Tanahashi because they want their main event spot. My question is, can Naito be an effective main event Chono level heel though. I def see Naito as more as the sympathetic babyface but who knows?

Nakamura/Tanahashi is the main event for the Tokyo Dome.

Not a surprising outcome, but personally I voted for Okada/Naito. This really makes Kazuchika look bad, which is a shame because he's been the most well built star the industry has seen in forever.

Ah, no. Chono did have a very good babyface run, but they turned him heel in '94 for a reason. He was being pushed down peoples throats and the crowds began to sour on him. He only got the IWGP belt once for a reason.

Pretty much the same exact thing that's happening to Naito now. The bookers are going to have to come up with something new for him.

NJPW's heavyweight division is the best it's ever been (not even that close, really) and is up there with Mid-Atlantic in the 80's, AJPW in the 90's, and Attitude Era heavyweights as one of the best divisions ever.

wasnt that because he kept getting injured or something??

don't get me wrong, the 85% spandex pants chono was kinda corny, but he wasnt getting pushed no harder than tanahashi has been, and chono wasnt ever a super pretty boy metro looking cat like tanahashi either i havent followed puro in like forever, i just pick up some news once in a while and from what I know

mutoh has a new promotion, noah is all but dead, ajpw is tna status, njpw is wwe of the shyt, so now you say that njpws heavy division is quite possibly the best its ever been

but njpw back in the day had hansen, vader, chono, hashimotos fat ass, kensuke, hogan, nagata, so when you say best its ever been, are you speaking in terms of drawing and big shows or in terms of good matches?

Bruh, it's 2013. No one in the world is drawing like they used to back in day, but business IS back up for NJPW after falling hard in the mid-00's, they're drawing well, and yeah, the match quality is better up and down the ranks than it ever has been in the company.
