What is controversial there? Saying wrestling is supposed to be kind of dumb and isn't a serious endevour? Lucha is kind of dumb. It has weird internal logic/bumping/selling that doesn't really exist in other parts of the world. It also was much easier to get tapes from Japan in the 80s/90s than from Mexico, and outside of the cruiserweights in WCW, the crossover between America/Canada/Japan wrestling has been far stronger and more pronounced than that of America/Canada/Mexico.
It's pretty fukking easy to see why puro is respected more than lucha in online circles, even if you disregard taste. Dudes coming in there like "Well, wrestling fans think Mexico is poor and dirty, while Japan is cool and stoic" or "white people love Mexican food, but hate mariachi music, because even if they don't realize it, they have racial and cultural biases".
Mother fukker, some people like metal. Some people like rap. Some people like country. Some people like all of them mixed into some chimera of noise. Those fukks need EVERYTHING to somehow be related to race/religion/politics/economy/some deeper philosophical truth. Dawg, you're watching men in underwear fake fight, you fukk. It's not serious.
