A few things...
If that were a WWE match we'd be calling it the match of the year. The kicks, yo, the kicks.

Off the ropes, in the corner, and always with a head of steam. And the big dudes are very physical. They understand how to use their size and how to long monstrous.

But I want to note that the psychology is all over the place. Big dudes had crushing maneuvers that should have won the match.

The young guys/smaller guys need to sell better. Makes me wonder about their back story.

And what's up with the weird ass serenade at the end?

Little/smaller dudes surviving huge amounts of punishment is part of the style. Hope spots and comebacks are fueled by "fighting spirit" and although I'm the first to admit that modern puroresu tends to rely way too much on those tropes (along with way too long finishing sequences and nearfalls), you are gonna find those type of matches everywhere when you watch japanese wrestling.

Onto the match itself. I liked the story of the two young dudes (the future of the promotion, Endo is 23 and Takeshyta is 19) trying to survive the power of Sekimoto and Okabayashi - a tag team from Big Japan that has invaded other promotions and taken their belts in the past, specially Sekimoto who had a Lesnar-like reign in DDT in 2010 - but never being able to really get the upper hand. It was a pretty decisive victory all things considered.

All that said, I don't think the match is a real MOTYC. Takeshyta and Endo SHOULD have sold better, I agree, and they couldn't rally the crowd behind them (it would've been a different story if the match was held in Tokyo though). I still thought the match was very good and most of all I liked it as a set up for an eventual rematch down the line.

DDT is a "fukkery based" promotion. Even thogh they do have serious wrestling, a huge part of their charm is comedy and just freaky/weird japenese stuff. The guys that appeared in the end challenging Sekimoto and Okabayashi are comedy wrestlers, that's why Sekimoto had the :dwillhuh: face at the end.

@Jmare007 What I meant was that it would be a match of the year candidate for WWE. Didn't mean to imply it deserved it, though.

When those dudes walked to the ring it reminded me of when I was a kid and I saw Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy and Dr Death Steve Williams.

They look like bad asses, but when you learn that they can wrestle, you start to wonder, "well, who the hell can beat these guys?"

Yes, I liked the story of weight vs. speed. For the rematch I'd like to see more combination moves from the challengers.

Help me out with the promotion: I thought this was for the IWGP tag belts. Did the young guys (can't recall their names) hold 2 tag titles?

The match is from the "DDT" (Dramatic Dream Team) promotion. At this point it's probably the n°2 company in Japan, it's between them and Dragon Gate.

The two young guys are Tetsuya Endo (23 years old) and Konosuke Takeshyta (19 years old, the one using shiny pants), they are part of the "Happy Motel" stable. They were the company's tag team champions (KO-D Tag Team Titles) in the match you saw.

The big guys are Daisuke Sekimoto and Yuji Okabayashi, from the Big Japan promotion.

Do they give Ibushi the win over Tanahashi though :patrice:

For some reason Kojima/Shibata interests me...

No way Okada wins this right?
This early in the year they should avoid further Tanahashi/Styles/Okada matches. No matter how good they are, you run the risk of making them less special. I'd say let Ibushi win and challenge Nakamura and win the IC belt or let this be Shibata's break out year. Either way, this is gonna be dope af.

Wait, so were Endo and Takeshyta the KO-D Tag Team champs while they were the IWGP champs? Or was that an old match that was posted?

Yeah, at no point there was any match or post in this thread that could lead you to believe Endo and Takeshyta were IWGP champs breh  @DocZulu
