Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
More stories by Mark BergenAugust 7, 2017, 9:21 PM EDT

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has fired an employee who wrote an internal memo blasting the web company’s diversity policies, creating a firestorm across Silicon Valley.

James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote the note, confirmed his dismissal in an email, saying that he had been fired for "perpetuating gender stereotypes." A Google representative didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Google’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai sent a note to employees on Monday that said portions of the employee’s memo "violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace." But he didn’t say if the company was taking action against the employee.

Damore’s 10-page memorandum accused Google of silencing conservative political opinions and argued that biological differences play a role in the shortage of women in tech and leadership positions. It circulated widely inside the company and became public over the weekend, causing a furor that amplified the pressure on Google executives to take a more definitive stand.

report, 69 percent of its workforce and 80 percent of its technical staff are male.

cacs gon cac...:beli: how you have an engineering job at Google of all places and STILL not happy B???:why:

He threw away a six figure job because he couldnt keep his opinions to himself. Entitled millenials:hhh:

From what I heard it's not like other gigs. The current rising culture in engineering is 6 hour days, efficiency, general wellness, etc. Google, again so I've heard, basically forces you to live there. Hence the games and neck messages and frills and shyt. I don't defend this dude whatsoever, but it sounds like he snapped and let that cism out because he had the gig but didn't have a real life.

That's something I don't get with these tech companies. They have the ability to have damn near every employee telework from anywhere in the world with video conferencing, email and instant messaging at their disposal but they force these folks to come in to the office full time?:what:

That makes me wonder if that's also another hidden barrier of entry cost to work at these Tech Valley outfits.:jbhmm:

According to the article in the OP and also sort of obvious, confidentiality is everything. Also, the trend is to be like a cult. It will pop eventually. It has to. I'm reading this book called Vaporized by Rob Tercek and it breaks down pretty sensibly where tech is going, for progammers and users alike. Amazon is about to change the game with embracing remote work.

You just haven't been targeted, yet. Or your role isn't one that makes cacs and other non-Blacks envious of you.

Trust me, if you're truly a star, you will be targeted at some point.

It's a guarantee if you are in a leadership position.

yeah, I wonder if he's an African American or an immigrant black talking that type of talk....hmmm.

Didn't hear just assumed that they were liberal cause how silicon valley usually voted. Seems I was dead wrong your 100% right on the bro culture attitude though.

yeah, liberal means weed & LGBTQ+.....nothing to do with black friendly at all.

that said....in the usa democrats are conservative as well as their politics are center right, lol. Democrats are not even at least center left, imo.

Because he got fired? Breh could've just, you know, not air out his views and call out his employer's policies in such a public fashion.

Maybe he and everyone that agrees with him should adhere to that "personal responsibility" concept conservatives love going on loudly and often about.

When people can do whatever they want and 80+% of STEM jobs are held by males, there is a reason deeper than "social constructs"... and he wasn't offbase with his critique of outreach programs.
That said, he is paying the price:yeshrug: It is what it is.

So how do you explain this? :jbhmm:

The percentage of women in CS tracked upward along with the rest of these fields, and then tanked. Somehow women just naturally lost aptitude for CS while continuing to gain it for physical sciences :troll:

Which critiques was he on point about? The two biggest ones that stand out to me are:
There's a high priority queue and special treatment for "diversity" candidates

He doesn't actually go in-depth about what this high priority queue is or the special treatment "diversity" candidates get. So what exactly is he objecting to? Am I supposed to just take his word for it that women and non-Asian minorities get fast-tracked through the entire interview process and have a better chance of getting a job than anyone else? Because nothing he wrote supports any of this.

Hiring practices which can effectively lower the bar for "diversity" candidates by decreasing the false negative rate.

There's a link that I'm guessing is supposed to support this point, but it's restricted to Google employees, so I can't actually see what it links to. I can take an educated guess and say it's something dealing with how Google is looking into ways to reduce its false negative rate when evaluating candidates during their interview process.

If that's the case, so long as these are practices that are universally applied, I don't see the actual issue here. There's been a lot of chatter in recent years about how the interviewing process for software developers in the industry as a whole is completely broken and skews too heavily towards filtering out false positives. Google and other big tech companies are known for grueling interview processes that don't match up with what the day-to-day work of a software engineer is like.

I'm sure he's already a martyr as far as conservatives are concerned, but it just reads like a ill-conceived rant against diversity in general, with the veneer of reasonableness that some conservatives like to apply to their arguments to make it seem like they're just innocently questioning some policy and not arguing in favor of some more retrograde policy or another.

In the memo he faulted the company for offering mentoring and other opportunities to its employees based on gender or race... what these programs are exactly is unclear.
I personally don't believe in "gender balance" or in diversity being inherently good.
I didnt find anything outrageous about him claiming men have a higher drive for status:yeshrug:
But he had to know the company leans heavily to the left and that he was going to be crucified. It is what it is... dont think it would of been this big an issue if white women weren't being shyt on.

Google BEEN RACIST.......all you gotta do is check they're news section and the headlines and you can read between the lines.

Couple years back during the treyvon, mike brown, eric garner era it was EASILY viewable that Google News supported the white male ideological train of thought in America just by the headlines they showed and the order that they were in.

I think it helps that most of the minorities that get an opportunity in Silicon Valley look up to white culture and want to emulate it anyway.....
