Bill Russell. The Finals MVP trophy is named after him. And he's the reason the Celtics are the best franchise in NBA history.

debating between kobe and bill russell will not get you anywhere because:
a) nobody here saw bill russell play, we merely go off legend.
b) kobe's nba does not even remotely resemble russell's nba.
russell didn't even play with a three point line!
at the end of the day they are both arguably the best player of their generation. there's no need to compare them. it can't be done.
Hakeem should be higher. Higher than Shaq and duncan

1. There's extensive footage of Bill Russell playing. Russell clearly dominated in his time and was the anchor for the greatest dynasty in NBA history. Plus, Russell's accomplishments speak for themselves.
2. Russell's era of the NBA was a more difficult era in terms of competition and level of physicality. And Russell thrived.
Russell is a lock for top 3. Kobe's in the top 10.
with a resume like that why don't you have him at #1?
You could make a very strong argument for him being the best ever.
I wouldn't place him ahead of Jordan because Jordan's won damn near every accolade and honor.

i think you might be right about russell over kobe. i mean yea they came up in different eras but fact is you could at least entertain the argument that russell is the greatest ever. with kobe you really can't.
i'm curious, in your humble opinion how many players do you believe you COULD make the argument for? where in that top 10 do you draw that line?
Jason Kidd is missing
My top 5: Jordan, Russell, Kareem, Magic, Bird.
I'd only consider Jordan, Russell and Kareem for the greatest ever. Each of them created the legacies (and dynasties) that their respective franchises enjoyed and benefit from.
