  • Age. The risk for high blood pressure increases with age.
  • Male gender. Men have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure earlier in life.
  • Family history. This means that you have blood relatives who have high blood pressure.
  • Smoking.
  • Being overweight or obese.
  • Alcohol. The risk goes up for anyone drinking more than average: 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women.
  • Too little exercise. The recommended amount of exercise is an average of 30 to 40 minutes of moderately to high intensity activity 4 to 5 days a week.
  • Sensitivity to sodium (salt). In some people, eating too much salt leads to high blood pressure.
  • Type 2 diabetes, gout, or kidney disease.
  • Pregnancy. Some women who do not have high blood pressure develop it during pregnancy.
  • Certain medicines or herbal supplements. Taking certain medicines and herbal supplements can raise blood pressure in some people. Common ones include steroids, ibuprofen, and diet pills.

Change your lifestyle

If you have high blood pressure, you can lower your blood pressure by making changes in your lifestyle. Your healthcare provider can help you find what changes you need to make and how to make them.

These are the basics of a healthy lifestyle:

  • Don't smoke or quit smoking.
  • Keep yourself at a healthy weight, or a body mass index below 25.
  • Get at least 30 to 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days.
  • Buy low-salt or salt-free foods, and use little or no table salt.
  • Eat 2 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of different colored vegetables a day.
  • Eat fewer foods from animals to avoid saturated fat.
  • Use only nonfat or low-fat dairy products.
  • Drink fewer sugary drinks.
  • Limit how much alcohol you drink. This means no more than 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for women.
If lifestyle changes do not lower your blood pressure enough, then you may need to take medicine. Often people need to take several different medicines to drop their blood pressure to a normal level. Two types of medicines seem to work better at lowering blood pressure among African Americans. These are thiazide diuretics and long-acting calcium channel blockers. Treating other chronic health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, is also important.

I've had hypertension since my early 20s and I've never weighed over 165 :yeshrug: sometimes you just have bad genes and need to get on meds :francis:

Funny thing is though, I have a sister who has struggled with her weight most of her life and is prediabetic...but her blood pressure is A1. :unimpressed:
I had an uncle who smoked and drank everyday and ate like shyt. Also had a family history of high blood pressure. He always had great blood pressure.

Im fukked
My shyt consistently 140/89 but the doctor always says it’s normal
thats NOT normal for black people

I timestamped (listen for at least 3 minutes) where this doctor starts talking about how it blood pressure is different for different ethnicities and races
He specifically points out how 140/90 can be dangerous for black folks

there is a lot of misinfo on this subject (im reading it in this thread)....
High blood pressure doesnt just run in your family...
its about the food youre eating.

Black people need to learn that the traditional western diet is not good for a lot of us

I had to learn about all this a couple years ago when I found out my blood pressure was high...
im not fat and workout at least 4 days a week.

The issue was the carbs I was eating...
once I stopped eating bread/carbs every meal my BP dropped FAST

im now consistently under 120

You can be skinny or thin and still have high blood pressure. Also high cholesterol isn’t just a fat person thing.

At my first job outta school we had a technician that was an old Thai woman. She had to be 95 lbs max but told me she takes BP medication for high BP. All genetic apparently. Seemed so crazy to me at the time because I had always thought "high BP = obesity".

When my doctor, a Black woman, pulled me to side about my high BP it changed my life.

One, because she pulled me up because I’m Black and that mattered to her. I now know the importance of docs who come from where we come from.

Two, she said this:

Her husband is Black. She knows the stresses of Black men. She also knows how our community thinks of high BP (you’re raising my pressure is a joke)

She said what’s really happening with BP is it sounds like nothing but it’s just that your heart valves have to work harder. So if your heart is working harder then it should for 20 years str8, like any machine or car, it’s going to give out earlier.

Simple as fukk but never explained to me like that.

So she said take your meds. Stop trying to be tough. Just give your heart a break.

Wow.

Then when I would get my pressure down, i would have say, a few drinks one night on a weekend, check BP the next morning and Bp is sky high negating all the work I put in that week.

So I realized on my own - liquor and wine or almost like poison. Skip 4 workouts - BP sky high. Eat crazy for 2 days. Sky high.

It just put so many things in perspective- like where I’m from we talk about alcoholics or crack addicts and not taught about the other things killing us.

Keep this doctor until she retires :salute:

Real talk, How do you go to gym constantly and not have cardio incorporated even somewhat. Something like 10 min pre or post would do wonders.
At times I'll ride my bike 25 minutes to the gym, do a 1 hour workout, and then ride home 25 minutes back but my issue is consistency. I know I should be do cardio at least three to four times a week but I just don't. I do have a high-speed jump rope with the rope being steel braided wire and the handles connected via ball bearings so I will make sure to do it at least 15 to 25 minutes a day four times a week while I'm in Colombia.

If you riding your bike to and from you are good. I HAAAAATE cardio but I got to get it in, I like doing intervals. So post workout I do stair master or incline the treadmill and set it at like 3.5 mph and you will get a good cardio in.. Do some sprints after 10 minute warm up on incline :banderas:

If I hit the track on weekends, sprint 200, walk 100.. :blessed:

Damn. Don't even remember the last time I checked my blood pressure. But I know my health has taken a hit this year. Been way too stressed out. I'm glad I've been starting to get right with my nutrition though
