I'm a big J. Cole fan, but I didn't love the album. Probably around a 7/10 for me. I almost feel like he was trying to hard to appeal to too many masses, mainstream rap, his fanbase, women. I don't know if all the rumors about Jay-Z not wanting to put it out without some sort of hit single are true, but it almost sounded like the album was forced. I also feel like he dumbs himself down with all the curse words.

Hopefully working with Kendrick will help him see how to go back to just spitting and being a rapper.

I think a lot of internet heads hyped him up too much because they wanted to be on the 'next thing' first and now there is this big drop off because he didn't turn into a super star.

The guy still makes solid music. Hes talented. Not the most talented in the game but there is thought put into his music so I respect it personally.

He got grammy's and sold over 600k, if he ain't a superstar, who really is?
Drake, Wayne, Jay, Kanye, Wiz, Em and that's it?

He dropped a solid 1st album, did more than the label expected him too.
Compared to other new rappers debut, he sold a lot more and also better than most. Except Drake, the album was a bit better than Drakes but sold considerably less.
Both 3.5-4 mics.

These dudes is retarded. Cole has probably the most dedicated and loyal fanbase out of all the new cats(only wiz and spitta can make a claim but i dont think they sold what he did). His shows are crazy too.

i dont know what your definition of super star is, but cole is definitely well known. hes pretty much a household name amongst the target audience 18-34, but like people said the album is just too slow and boring to hold much attention. its cool for the first couple of play thrus but once the message is delivered theres nothin much else 2 gain from his music.

I wouldn't consider him a superstar like Jay-z, Kanye West, Eminem or Lil Wayne personally. Those are bigger than life guys, stadium types. EVERYONE knows who those guys are. If you ask a random person who J Cole is (non hip hop head) most probably wouldn't know for certain. Not saying hes unknown either. Hes a talented star but hes not a super star. More James Harden than Lebron James.

I don't think hes a disappointment at all. Only way I can see someone saying that is if if they had an off the wall, over inflated from the hype expectation of what he was going to do. Hes a talented artist IMO.

Friday Night Lights should've been his debut album but Sideline Story was good and im expecting his sophomore album to be even better plus sale the same.

Cole the best new nikka in rap with substance and lyrics Cole World.

I kept trying to tell nggs that its only enough room for a select few hiphop artists to become superstars in this game - and it's not quite enough room for J-Cole - it's not his fault though - it's just the climate of the industry

Well that's not the disappointing thing about him, his popularity doesn't mean much, it's the quality of what he's putting out, which really fell after FNL.

Not enough room for one of the highest selling rappers of last year not named Drake, Wayne, Lupe, Jay-Z or Kanye :snoop:

He did well because the timing of his release was when that #### Drake was on what I would call a hiatus. As soon as Drake released Take Care and came back on the seen heavy, Mr. Cole was soon forgotten.

Im no Drake fan either - my opinions on him are aligned with that DMX Power 105 interview
