Isn’t that kinda what they’re doing now?
yup..at least with Cinemark $100 you rent out an auditorium for yourself and family

i talking about redesigning them all... make them the size of living room..give it the at home feeling not the hey.. why just us 4 in an empty theater feeling

giving it the home personal feel

I hate corporates, but goddamn does it take some balls/leadership to make this move. Kudos to their leadership team. They ran the numbers and prob ran them over 10 years to see their target for Max. In the long run this is gonna pay off.. and the irony is... HBO really now just became Home Box Office...

Jason Kilar (CEO of Warner Media) has been on this tip for a long time. He was the original Hulu CEO way back in the early 2010s. He saw that streaming was the future and tried to warn the old media companies that they needed stop licensing their shows and also expand internationally to prevent the rise of Netflix. But those companies who had stakes in Hulu couldn't say no to the short term profits they were getting from to Netflix so it never happened. Reed Hastings (CEO of Netflix) is even on the record as acknowledging this and what a big break this was for Netflix.

Now Kilar is at Warner and is going all in on streaming like he always wanted. Biggest surprise is that AT&T by all accounts seems to be giving him the freedom to do it. Not a coincidence that the other execs he brought in were also a part of that original Hulu crew.

This is a genius move. WB was losing money shelving these movies. Tenet may of been it's sacrificial lamb, but it gave WB a template to go on in knowing that the international market is way healthier than the domestic. They also want to boost subscribers on HBOMax. So why not? They're going to make money from both ends with the little bit on the theatrical end, but a little bit on subscription side too. They see Netflix's success behind their movies they released on their streaming network which correspond with coming out in theaters, so they are on a "what do they got to lose" mode with their stagnation that has happened because of the pandemic.

The fans are going to be happy because they have a choice and access. They studio is satisfied because it is better to recoup SOMETHING than to lose everything. They know the writing is on the wall on theaters and want to jump ahead of the inevitable. They know this will definitely boost the number of subscribers and would appease the theater chain by having it in their theaters still. The only people who may not like this are the filmmakers themselves. Many them filmed their movies with the INTENT solely on the big screen. Not all of them are like Scorsese who accepted Netflix to release his last movie, and that's due to industry shenanigans that tried to compromise his creative freedom... but with that said, it may give filmmakers more creative freedom taking advantage of HBO Max which Zack Snyder was blessed to produce his cut of Justice League the way he want it.

I approve this move.

I don't know how da fuq they gonna make this work for DUNE. They seem like they have to move the release up because I expect/hope by October (1st was the latest date they gave) most theaters that didn't close down completely will be operative anyway. It's gonna be tougher to get sequels. And HBOmax got no 4K... :mjcry:

For starters, Wonder Woman is going to be on 4K for HBO Max. That was announced a few days ago, so in all likelihood, ALL the theatrical films would follow suit. I do not see why not since they're doing it for Wonder Woman.

The other thing is with DUNE. And not really Dune, but with Denis Villeneuve's last film BLADE RUNNER 2049 which was a HUGE FLOP on the big screen, despite how beautiful the film looked on the big screen. I can see the executives feeling apprehensive anyway and hoped for more people to at least get to watch Dune on HBOMax where the viewer can take it's time seeing it knowing this is going to be a long film to view.

Definitely...

cost of these streaming services are gonna explode down the line. But if this really takes off... I think the amount of these mega blockbusters will also go down. Doubt there is gonna be an appetite in these corporations, for movies that cost 100+ million to make just to have them go on streaming day 1.
Production cost/budget will likely go down
