I never forgot Kendrick saying this tho:
"when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us?"
As if we all dont respect ourselves. Lowkey it also gives racist whites a pass.
Also with him giving Iggy Azelea a pass. Saying "God wants" here to "do her thing,"
Nas gave Iggy a pass too...
This is the thing. It's almost impossible to sit here with a straight face and make comparisons between modern day Kendrick and Drake, two rappers in the relative beginnings of their career to 2001-03 Jay-Z/Nas two rappers who were already damn near considered legends by that time period.
Nas was 5 albums deep. Having put out TWO platinum albums within a single year.
Jay-Z was 6 albums deep, having had one of the most consistently best selling careers of the time period.
People like to rewrite history and say Nas is not nor ever was "mainstream" when in fact, Nas IS a mainstream MC and has been since the moment he dropped It Was Written. You don't go on a streak of 7 straight platinum albums without being mainstream. I Am's first week outperformed Vol. 3's first week, notes stop with the bullshyt, Nas is a mainstream rapper, it's what he CHOOSES to do with his platform and the messages that he conveys that make him incredible.
Drake nor Kendrick have maintained the continued relevancy that Nas and Jay had achieved at that time period. We're not even mentioning the battle. Drake copped SO many pleas when it came to directly responding to Control that it was damn near laughable.
