my opinion as an avid film goer and cinema fantac., this was atrocious and missed some pretty good bits as it had a decent budget.

also, the elm street 5 reference at the end, somebody in here mentioned about Pennywise morphing into Krueger?

There were a couple other references in it earlier. Got the "Here's Johnny" thing near the end, plus another early I don't remember now :yeshrug:

But honestly, why did this movie start with a fukking HATE CRIME? That felt deeply exploitative, since the film never revisited either the victims or the attackers.

Probably has something to do with richie's suppressed gayness

I definitely got that impression, but not doing any work to connect the two was weak. I think that being IT's first appearance meant that the attackers were "possessed" by IT like Bowers...but it didn't really clarify anything.

And if they wanted to make the connection you mention,
maybe have Richie react to learning about that attack?

Yeah, the hate crime happened in the book. But
was Ritchie gay in the book? I really don’t remember that but I don’t think he was
. All in all, the movie was okay - very Hollywood, but okay. Don’t think I’ll watch again until I’m able to stream it online or something.

Seriously? This is in the book and the scene is based off a real hate crime that happened when King was writing the book

And?

If it's equally underdeveloped or disconnected from the rest of the story, then it's probably just as shytty as it exists in the movie.

I don't care what is or isn't from the book. All that matters is whether it works on the screen.

exploitative to who? lol. its in the book and it lets mike know that IT has returned because he hears the police report about a mangled body being discovered. This is what IT does, it has a corrupting dark influence over the entire town.

All of Derry's crimes, including the hate crime, are much more developed in the book. They are there to illustrate how Derry as a whole is a destitute town full of inhumane evil and violence that It feeds on. There's a whole chapter in the book that details dozens of gruesome, unexplained, and horrendous crimes (and "accidents") committed in the small town that should get national attention but somehow it escapes notice from the country as a whole.

None of that is really baked into the film though, so I could see how it reads as random and disconnected from the main plot.
