@bdizzle @RubioTheCruel @Ice_MF_Mike I got a foreign connect for IT jobs :ehh:

I'm being put in for a position that says they'll pay for my CCNA and give me networking experience, as well as pay some other education.

My question is, if I start doing contract work out of the country (this would be in New Zealand) would it affect my future ability to get jobs in the US? The skills and experience should be universal right? :lupe:

Why are you having trouble with?
Here's a site that asks random subnetting questions. I used it a lot to verify I knew my shyt.

subnettingquestions.com - Free Subnetting Questions and Answers Randomly Generated Online

Here's a sample question:

Here's the process I go through in my head when subnetting:

Determine the network mask

/25

Use the network mask to determine the subnet of the host

1. Convert the subnet mask (/25) to binary - 11111111 11111111 11111111 10000000

2. Separate the network portion (1's) from the host (0's)

Network - 11111111 11111111 11111111 1

Host - 0000000

3. Since the first 3 octets are all 1's, you know the subnet starts with 192.168.92

4. Convert the last octet from binary to decimal to determine the subnet

10000000 in decimal is 128, so the subnet for this address 192.168.92.128 (If you don't know how to go from binary to decimal, look it up).

192.168.92.128 is the subnet for the IP address

5. To determine the number of valid hosts use the formula 2^n -2 where "n" is the number of host bits

2^7 = 128

128 - 2 = 126

There are a max of 126 available hosts in the 192.168.92.128 subnet

6. To determine the first available host, add 1 to the last octet in the subnet

subnet = 192.168.92.128

add 1 to last octect = 192.168.92.129

192.168.92.129 is the 1st valid host on the subnet

7. To determine the last valid host add the number of valid hosts to the last octect in the subnet

number of valid hosts = 126

Last octect in subnet 192.168.92.128 = 128

126+128 = 254

The last valid host in the subnet is 254 or 192.168.92.254

8. To determine the broadcast address, add 1 to the last valid host in the subnet

Last valid host is 192.168.92.254

Add 1 to last valid host = 192.168.92.255

The broadcast address is 192.168.92.255

Summary:

Host: 192.168.92.137/25

Subnet: 192.168.92.128

First valid host: 192.168.92.129

Last valid host: 192.168.92.254

Broadcast address 192.168.92.255

Available hosts: 126

It's a bit confusing at first, but if you practice for about an hour or so, you should get the idea. For the exam you should be able to subnet in your head, so practice it before you take the exam.

The whole process is killing me. Converting to binary Im definitely not getting. I know I could use a calculator but I need to be able to do it by hand. Its a bit fustrating. Im gonna keep at it though and read over your notes and see if I can get it. If not maybe the networking path just ain't my lane. :to: One way or another I gotta find a escape from help desk. Ima keep grindin. Apprciate the help

Breh, there's a million and one resources online that'll show you how to subnet. Start googling and check YouTube, and practice. Do nothing but subbetting for like 2-3 hours and you'll be straight.

The only thing the matters are the skills that you know. As long as you're skillset is increasing where you work is irrelevant.

I'm a Sr System Administrator right now, need to find a way to break into the six figures asap

Any ideas?

I want to go into System Engineering but once you get in there, people don't leave!

The reason you're not at 6 figures is because you probably don't have a six figure skillset. Go online and look for jobs that pay 100k plus and see the skills they're asking for me. You might need to pass some new exams, learn some new skills, or a combination of both.

Are you Windows or Linux admin and what skillset do you have?

Plus here i have time to study at work and improve my craft, BS on here, and meet a lot of dope people.

Like right now i'm just posting on here while doing my CCNA courses

How many passwords you reset today :mjpls:

Yesterday before I went to bed I spent probably an hour and some change tweaking up what I already had , basically putting my skills and computer knowledge on there , but I'm still not really satisfied , I feel like something is missing for some reason . I've been doing this almost everyday for like a week .

Good looks for the valid advice breh , will definitely follow suit :salute:

Look up IT resumes, see what formats they use, then swagger Jack em. That's what I did.

The confusing thing for me initially was all the different methods and styles of calculation that seem to be out there. The trick is finding a method of thinking about subnetting and the calculation that works for YOU. Like bdizzle said, work on it for a couple days. Watch a few different videos and read sources. The actual calculation is not that hard, once you get your own personal process worked out and you can only do that with some pen and paper practice :manny:

Windows system admin (GPOs, SCCM, imaging)
Weblogic (SOA and BPM)
SQL clustering
Powershell (can script just fine)

I know CentOS
