Shell Scripting is Linux, the others are Windows, and that's about it. Syntax is obviously different and stuff. I think they brought PowerShell to Linux but I never looked into it.

Yeah I’m about to get on my Linux shyt . Tbh I don’t think interested in networking anymore even tho im still studying for my ccna. But I think I wanna do whatever tf work with scripting . Im doing Linux after ccna

Finally able to post

Just wanted to say y’all helped me a lot in here

I was in my last semester in college fall 2020 and saw that software engineering wasn’t gonna work for me. By way of thecoli, I got into IT.

Year 1 of help desk was long to get through. After that year, got a better paying service desk gig, I fixed up my LinkedIn and am getting hit up by recruiters every week. I’m in year two of service desk now, and will be looking into switching to a Junior sys admin role soon.

Thanks for all of the good info provided here

Need Advice. I'm at Morehouse currently. My majors are comp sci and electrical engineering. I currently work remote at Thompson and Reuters. They deal with tax/accnting software and info for the letter folks during tax time. I got my in through an old Whole foods teammate who is there now.

What should I be doing currently to make my resume stand out amongst all the other folks getting tech degrees activities, connections etc?

My Pops is at GM white-collar and I have a few cousins who work at Ford in their automation dept. I'm trying to get an internship next yr.

A good friend is at a community college working on a cyber security degree. A mutual friend said he should drop that and go join a tech boot camp.

Our mutual friend join careerist bookcamp and now he is making 6 figures and works between ATL and Austin Txt. He works in tech sales for sales force. Not bragging but is a boot camp the real best move?

2 different situations I need advice from brehs out in the field.

Work experience (like you have now) and side projects are what will help you stand out. Look at job postings that are interesting to you, find the common technologies, then try to put together some projects that use that tech. You want to do better than a simple Tic Tac Toe project, unless you're spicing it up and implementing some sort of algorithm like A* underneath. As a student you have to be in the mindset that there are thousands of other new grads just like you. The average one goes to class and goes home and likely doesn't have an internship on their resume - I was the average new grad. The difference maker for me was projects out side of school. I listed a couple as work experience even though they weren't. Even so, it took me 6 months to land my first role.

Stick to the plan. Get your degrees, apply FREQUENTLY, and to college grad programs WHILE STILL IN SCHOOL, practice your algorithms. I think boot camps rely on deals with companies to get placement (I don't have experience with them). Many companies screen off of basic requirements and if you don't show a computer science degree or equivalent, your application will go nowhere. I'm at a Fortune 100 company, although not FAANG, and haven't heard of anyone making it in from a boot camp.

I am getting offers for 70k plus cloud positions but I don't feel confident in any of the networking and Linux concepts listed in the job description. I know the basics and maybe some mid level shyt but idk what these nikkas finna pull out their ass and ask me.:sadcam:

I don't want to go to the interview and sound like I don't know what I am talking about. So I think I'm going to deep dive into more Networking and Linux concepts without actually getting the certs for those cause I'm broke rn. Them CCNA, Network+, and Linux certs cost bread. I just need more knowledge.

On the other hand I been doing more projects within AWS, working with Lambda, and creating scripts in Linux to help me.

I just recently obtained the AWS CCP too and about to take the exam for Solutions Architect in two more weeks. I just wish tech jobs had more mentorship or apprenticeship programs

Breh look up a lady named Holly Lee on YouTube. I follow her and she has something that maybe able to help you. The link I posted she is talking about AWS. She has worked in FAANG

Also tech brehs don't matter if u have android or I Phone. Look up an app called Blind. It's like LinkedIn for tech. They talk about total compensation packages, what's now what's next. It's mad helpful.

The only thing you need is a work email. It's private they don't tell whom ever you work for. My boy who works out in San Fran put me on it.

You can even save threads and get updates like you can here.

The first thing I'd suggest is drop the double major and just pick one. It's over kill with no real major reward. As far as a boot camp vs a degree well degree will always be better but shyt a boot camp ain't bad either. What's your goals? Is a degree important to you? Are you really into academia and research and actual computer science or do you just want to get the bag and make money? Your friend in tech sales is making money because yeah it's sales and that requires no degree. But is sales something you're interested and/or have the personality for? Are you the type that really wants to work for a FAANG then a degree would go a long way to that but you can also get into them without one. There's multiple ways to skin a cat these days. Maybe you can go part time for a semester or two and do a bootcamp and test things out for yourself. If you like the bootcamp and the job prospects then continue with that. If not then finish your degree.

Breh check for Holly Lee on YouTube like I told breh. I posted a link talking about AWS. I'm sure Holly has some cloud info. She has worked for several companies and did well enough to hire a nanny for her kid. I was on her YouTube live and that's what she said.

That being said I'm sure she has a clue or know someone who does. With this tech side I still have my training wheels on getting my teeth kicked in but I'm not quitting.

Also look up Blind on Android or I phone. That is a nice site that's tech based but it's like reddit for tech professionals and employees. You would need a professional tech email. There they talk total compensation, good and bad changes in real time. A good friend told me about it.
