Do you really have to memorize all these TCP and UDP port numbers? That's more or less what I mean. Understanding the concept is more important than knowing the numbers because stuff like that can be referenced if needed. It almost comes across as this cert industry only exist to justify it's own existence rather than to show you can handle stuff because memorizing and regurgitating this stuff short term on a test doesn't prove much beyond your test taking abilities.
It really depends honestly, there are a few ports I think everyone should know what protocols they represent off the top of their head (80/443/22/53). Whether it's for an interview or not those ports are common and important enough that you will see them everyday. But I wouldn't expect someone to tell me which protocol uses tcp/1433 on the spot. I only know that is ms-sql because I setup VPN tunnels with that port open. All that shyt is googled on the job if i dont know it off the top.
Its very silly interviews become a game of memorization after awhile. Only a few companies truly ask you questions that test how you think.
