I don't know anybody with an actual cloud job. They seem damn near impossible to find I think. I'm ready to do something else where you aren't worked like a slave.
:francis:

Like what? How many IT jobs have you had? I'm trying to figure out my second IT job. All I know is I don't want to be salary (seems like they work you like a slave) and or on call.

You can forget being hourly unless you work as a contractor. Most companies are like 25-50% understaffed. Because they expect IT people to work tons of hours to keep things running. That's why I switch jobs every couple of years if the company refuses to refill vacant positions.

I work in cybersecurity which is the absolute worse when it comes to being understaffed. I'm thinking about switching to a Cloud Engineer type job. Companies would rather risk getting hacked than take cybersecurity seriously.

I started using noise canceling headphones when studying. Because every freaking sound distracts me. And I get rid of any distractions like locking my phone in a drawer. Before I could go to the Library for peace and quiet but not anymore.

Security isn't a money maker or cost savings, so they like to steer clear of it as much as they can. Or they steam through projects and don't let developers put an eye towards secure programming.

We had an internal call at Cisco last week and they announced they are going to cut 1B in costs over the next couple quarters.

Phase one, they are going to try to get rid of everybody over 55 by offering early retirement or just laying them off.

Phase two, they are going to target a groups for pay cuts.

Phase three they are just going to lay off tons and tons of people. The areas that will probably get hit hard are hardware r&d, route/switch, service provider, sdwan, etc

I say this to say...if you are just starting out don’t make the mistake cisco did and not follow the trends. Traditional IT will be dead soon, so switch your focus to dev ops, cloud, automation or security. That’s the only thing that will be left standing. Don’t bother with shyt like CCNA route/switch, A+, or anything else that is “legacy” IT that takes months of labs or studying. Skip that and start looking into something like AWS or GCP. Start trying to wrap your head around containers. Start dabbling with python or understanding APIs.

My team work a lot with Cisco products, lets just say we lost some guys and they are not backfilling them. So It's time for me to plan my exit very soon. My position is at least safe for two years or so but I will be out of there by then. So yeah lagacy I.T will definitely be a thing of the pass I will be planning my exit.

What are their severance packages looking like? I would imagine they won't be that generous.

How is Cisco going to be able to support existing customers after all these layoffs?

Are you going to switch fields away from Networking? I would say move to Cybersecurity but I'm seeing the first slowdown in hiring since like 2016. Barely any jobs open and the ones that are expect you to know everything.

A lot of Cisco products is Networking/Security. They have integrated a lot of their products. For example a Firewall is also an IPS. NGFW.

I was afraid of this answer, are you currently remote? Cloud Engineer sounds like it can be a remote gig? I was going to focus on security but I'm having second thoughts. Might just focus on networking or systems (Linux) or just go all in on the cloud.

best advice I can give besides reading throughout this thread is figure out what you want to do

when you know that go look for the job online, look at the requirements and that will give you a blueprint of what you need to start learning

again read throughout this thread, there’s a lot of gems throughout here

Currently taking courses at a community college for an AA (probably majoring in Web/mobile development) and I'm fascinated by Python (finished a few tutorials in Django and plan on tinkering with Flask and Selenium) and AWS.

Outside of the AWS certification, are there any cert I should try to pick up (particularly dealing with Python automation because I'm a lazy b*stard lol) or areas I should study to get better?

linux to add to the trifecta, that’s the route I’m trying to go

the fact that you want to automate is a huge plus

No need for this.. install virtualbox and run centos in a VM on you computer. You can also look into Vagrant which allows you to create/destroy VMs to your heart's content with a single command.

go with linuxacademy

Acg and La are the same company now...
