Sometimes insider information on layoffs gets posted on the board below.

If their taking such drastic actions this means this could drag on for years. I'm focusing on nothing but cloud Security from here on out. Because short sighted management will have you wasting time on obsolete technology. Next thing you know you're skills are obsolete and no longer in demand.

We had an internal call at Cisco last week and they announced they are going to cut 1B in costs over the next couple quarters.

Phase one, they are going to try to get rid of everybody over 55 by offering early retirement or just laying them off.

Phase two, they are going to target a groups for pay cuts.

Phase three they are just going to lay off tons and tons of people. The areas that will probably get hit hard are hardware r&d, route/switch, service provider, sdwan, etc

I say this to say...if you are just starting out don’t make the mistake cisco did and not follow the trends. Traditional IT will be dead soon, so switch your focus to dev ops, cloud, automation or security. That’s the only thing that will be left standing. Don’t bother with shyt like CCNA route/switch, A+, or anything else that is “legacy” IT that takes months of labs or studying. Skip that and start looking into something like AWS or GCP. Start trying to wrap your head around containers. Start dabbling with python or understanding APIs.

I'm almost done with my ccna and can't do that now, there will at least be field tech jobs available to those of us with networking experience. I would do that and focus on the future and I definitely think cloud security, VPN is it but I wouldn't say CCNA is dead and AWS and cloud security aren't something newbies can just jump into, no company would let you mess with that without adequate experience.

I agree, for the most part, the traditional IT jobs are dead, the long line of IT guys who just hook up routers/switches and troubleshoot PC issues is mostly dead, going to the cloud, VPN and remote work is the future. Security for the web for remote work will be very big, I agree mostly.

You would be surprised how many people jump right into cloud computing with just self study and a few certs. It’s such a difficult skill set to find that a lot of employers are just taking what they can get. Plus the guys with experience usually cost twice as much the guys without real world experience. That means a lot for smaller organizations who made shifts to the cloud

I agree with you that this is the route that companies will be in the future but I feel like we still are not there yet

these companies are still stingy when it comes to the years of unneeded experience when it comes to hiring

but I’m in nyc and it may be different here

AWS cloud practitioner is very easy and google cloud engineer isnt too bad as well

If you're fairly tech saavy, you could get the AWS cert with just watching youtube videos. The GCP cert will probably require you to do labs but they were free on google last time I checked.

Azure has an entry level cert that's pretty close to those as far as requirements and skillset needed, but I've never taken that exam.

My eventual goal is to aim for AWS, literally every move I make at my current company and cert/skills I chase is base on their requirements. Their pay for solutions architects is crazy but heard their interviews are crazy hard. lol, I am literally stalking their current employees on linkedin for their qualifactions.

I don't know anybody with an actual cloud job. They seem damn near impossible to find I think. I'm ready to do something else where you aren't worked like a slave.

Doubt they ask your manager. Going forward all that matters is your title. A security Engineer can be anything. If I learn aws security in and out lol you cant tell me shyt if I can answer all your question.

It's only a problem, if you embellish and dont know what you are talking about.

With my certs and added skills lol. I had 2 interviews so far. 2nd interview coming up next week. Paying over 6 figures
