Funny, you're not disagreeing with the content, you're trying to justify it

She's an artist so she can create whatever art she wishes - but as it stands, she has a man who's been unemployed for 4 years, the dude she tried to cheat on him with just wants to smash

Yeah, in the coming episodes she's gonna run into regular ordinary brothas :stopitslime:

And not totally surprising, you missed my point of the brother in Lethal Weapon - it's not his occupation, it's that he's employed and extremely ordinary. Somebody self sufficient, busy working on his job, that doesn't need a woman to help carry him through life (that also isn't bouncing a ball for a living)

Bookmark this thread - I bet she has no characters like this on her show.

If you don't like the reality that is being reflected, change the reflection... don't get mad at the mirror...

Black men are the most underemployed/unemployed men (by design) out here... it's not a farce to depict the struggle of dating an unemployed Black man...

Black men are having children out of wedlock at a higher rate than usual. Marriage rates are down. This website even proliferates the hit it and quit it, smash and dash mentality. So encountering a man who is only interested in sex is not bashing. It's the truth.

I don't agree that there won't be an ordinary brother on the show... I think there already was... the only interested in sex brother was very regular... I don't think he is a terrible person because he was looking for a friends with benefits situation. I think that is quite common in regular dudes these days.

It makes him a terrible choice as a partner but not a terrible person. Just like not all Black corporate women are stuck up, boogie, and manless; there are some.

I don't see why Black men feel offended by the depictions so far.

You do see that people can and will use this to paint black men as a monolith right? Not arguing with you cause I agree what with you said above. But we kinda have to recognize the potential for more mass stereotyping when we see it.

I don't think this is a very good argument for not depicting the every day reality we actually experience.

So am I but the world doesn't center around either of us.
Yes be we do live in it bro, do we not deserve to be counted as well? Or are we some how unimportant? Or better yet invisible. I belong to a site full of well employed successful black men who are building in the black community. I can link you if you want. We have some on this site too. Do they not exist in the world? Are they not a shade of black that should be counted, brother?

it's been years since u had shows where black men or black women wasn't shyttin on each other and it will continue..

at least on ballers u have a black man and woman married with a kid and both have good jobs and love each other i just wish they had more segments...

survivor remorse is also ok....

other than that anything else on tv with black folks don't look promising

God damn. I wanted the brehs to be wrong on this one but this show looks like some bs.

First scene depicts young "hood" children as black woman bashing hive mind sociopaths.

The way the boyfriend is portrayed made little sense to me. He's a good looking, well spoken guy but is still a bum? It's obvious they eeeent comfortable making him as "rough around the edges" as that kind of guy is in real life.

The whole "others" dynamic was extremely offensive. The whole issue with "dating out" is historical context. They demonized the fukk out of "Jamaal" and had this crazy inferiority complex towards his fiancé. Acting like black women view themselves as a consolation prize. "They wife up others so quickly", yet she was his first. Let other people be happy damn.

Then the whole plot with Daniel was so dumb. The old " just wants sex" stereotype. Portraying black men as these smooth talking beasts in heat.

This show is just a racist version of girls, without any depth to the male characters, that mixes in racial hierarchy and insecurity.

The fukked up thing is I have to watch to support a black woman getting her own show. Watching this makes me feel like one of those black people who voted for Obama in 2012 just because of how powerful it would be to see a black president get re elected.

Your an idiot if you don't see the stereotyping in the show.

As long as it's a woman's P.O.V. then its valid according to you.

The same argument can be said that all women are hoes as long as its coming from a rapper.

You just sound stupid period.

Not being in someone's story does not make you unimportant, we shouldn't add people to our stories who aren't actually in them for the sake of being fair.

If you were to start a series on your life and circle of friends who are upstanding people, I wouldn't expect you to add dope boys to the cast because "they deserve to be counted".

My big brother is a dope boy so he'd probably be in it. This is what I mean about a spectrum.

Also black creators are forced to add people who they don't interact with in their work for mass appeal because others think it's "important " my writing partner came to me with this same sentence for a comic we're writing.

Where is the stereotyping?

The real elephant in the room is the mirror you and many others hate to have staring back at you.

It's ironic how there are no shortage of men here on the coli who champion the very type of male they're quick to call a "stereotype" because a Black woman is sharing her experience and perception of that type of male.

You nikkas are ridiculous.

*Doesn't watch or DVR*

*Goes back to watching Atlanta*

:coffee:
I love Atlanta it's alternative comedy which is great but question, how is the perceived negative stereotypes that are in Issa rates show (haven't watched gonna watch tho) any different than the ones in Atlanta? Main character urn is homeless (can't take care of his kid or responsibilities. His girlfriend and parents take care of him), cousin sells drugs raps and shot someone the first episode, the funny dude is always stoned. These aren't exactly good depictions of black men aside from their dialogue which I do love.

That's fine, her big brother might not be a dope boy and the types of men who you believe should be represented in her story may not exist within the spectrum of HER, the story teller's, personal experience.
