Heat's Pat Riley dishes on Wade, Ellington, Richardson, James Johnson and more
▪ The Heat lacks a draft pick this year. Riley said “every other year is good enough” to have a good draft pick. “All we need is another 16th pick. We have enough. We have a good young core of players. We hope one of the guys we really like on July 1 might be tantamount to a first-round pick this year. I am not a draft pick guy. You know that. I’ve taken the team to the bottom. We have young players. We don’t want too many young players. You look at these teams that are rebuilding. All you need in this town is five years of what Philadelphia went through [he was being facetious, it appears]....
"My feeling on draft picks is they are valuable. They are valuable to trade for veteran players that have talent. The fact we don’t have a pick this year: Will we try to get one? Maybe. I would much rather have Goran Dragic than those two picks.”
Tank boys lost again
long as Riley alive I don't have to worry about a tank..it feels good Sixers still got plenty of room on their bandwagon tho, go scoop you a seat DariusWe just got washed in 5 in the playoffs by a team with multiple high draft picks on rookie deals with one of the highest payrolls in the league and no cap space.
Congrats on your moral victory against drafting young, cheap talent since spending a combined 62 million dollars on Dragic, Whiteside, and TJ alone next year is your idea of a good future.
See the big picture here. Being the new hawks, wizards, or hornets is the worst thing you can be as a basketball team. That’s basically what Milwaukee was post Ray Allen and pre Greek freak. If the goal is assemble another championship team, stockpiling draft picks and clearing cap space is the way to go. Trading draft picks for fringe all stars and giving big contracts to role players isn’t getting you anywhere close to that. No franchise player is gonna want to play for a mediocre team with no cap space. 2010 worked because the heat had their star that they got through a high draft pick and lots of cap space. Prime example right there.long as Riley alive I don't have to worry about a tank..it feels good Sixers still got plenty of room on their bandwagon tho, go scoop you a seat Darius
Stockpiling draft picks to compete when? when is enough, enough? ya'll dont see the big picture, ya'll just caught up in the hoopla of the "process".See the big picture here. I'm not getting into this again. The organization has made it clear for several years they aren't going to tank, really nothing more I need to say.The rebuild ends when the team drafts/signs 1-2 players that can be the building blocks of a championship team. You need picks and/or cap space to get stars to build a contender. The heat don’t have either of those or a clear cut star, or an offensive system that moves the ball well to get easy looks for the role players. Those are the ways to get them. You don’t go anywhere in this league without a star. The last team to reach the finals without a past, present, or future MVP was the 2009 magic (they’re the only team to do it since 2006), and they only made it because Kevin Garnett missed the playoffs. The last team to reach the finals without a past, present, or future defensive player of the year was the 2002 nets who only made it that far because someone had to win the east.
see the post above Darius.
The Celtics are doing the same thing. Stockpiling young, cheap talent and developing them while keeping maximum cap space. Why are the Celtics able to make moves? Because draft picks are worth a load. Most teams can't even trade for a star without throwing in draft picks.
Look at all the rising, young teams in the NBA. Draft picks, draft picks, and draft picks.
I'm happy you're more excited about being the Joe Johnson Hawks, pumpkin.
You fiending for treadmills like a middle-aged white women, praying that it'll help.
Tell me how excited and ecstatic you are about this season. That 5 game first round exit with getting straight outmatched by a team that hit the playoffs for the first time this year get you all wet for Riley? That's what you like, right?
