Same thing with my family. My maternal Grandma had a lot of New Year's traditions/superstitions she passed on to us.
Soul food on New Year's day.
A man needs to be the first person to enter your home on New Year's for good luck throughout the year.
Don't eat fowl on New Year's day or you'll be scratching yourself throughout the year.
Don't wash clothes on New Year's Day because you will wash someone out of the family.
No taste- none at all. I can’t do it.

Black eyed peas are better if cooked from dry beans in the crockpot pot or Dutch oven. Canned doesn’t give time to develop flavor without overcooking.

Funny you mentioned chitlins. My pop just called me and told me he’s gonna fix up some chitlins for him, my mama, and my brother friday. Moms don’t eat them, and my little bro barely does, so he’s really cooking them for himself.black eyed peas, collards and chitlins were the foundation of New Years growing up. I got a love/hate relationship with chitlins. I quit em at least 4X and keep coming back. I haven't had em in 4 years, tho.

Wish I was home to get some, lol
Haven't gotten thru the thread yet, but did anyone mention having to have a male cross the home's threshold first for good luck? Oh, we were also told not to sweep on New Year's Day because you sweep someone out of the family.
