Nobody considers him a great director. Everyone knows he makes popcorn flicks.

Art versus Money ?

I know I would rather see explosions and car chases than stimulating dialogue and coherent storylines

Every one of his film has me like

No, he's not overrated at all. If anything, Spike doesn't get enough credit.

I think Spike Lee is one of the best directors of the last 30 years. With movies like "Malcolm X", "Do The Right Thing", "School Daze", "She's Gotta Have It", "Mo Betta Blues", "25th Hour", "Get On The Bus", "He Got Game", "Jungle Fever", "Bamboozled", "Inside Man", and "Clockers".

His documentaries are great as well. "Jim Brown: All-American", "When The Levees Broke", "4 Little Girls" and "Bad 25" are all excellent documentaries.

He's far from overrated. He get's more hate than anything (especially from internet film snobs). Some of it's due to him being outspoken, most of it is just blind hate.. When he's in top form he drops great movies Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, 4 Little Girls, He Got Game, 25th Hour.

I can name at least 20 film directors that get constant praise that are far more overrated than he is.

I didn't think he was overrated until I joined the Coli, some people here claim that he should have at least one oscar for best picture and one for best director.

C'mon, he's good but not that good.

He's not really rated all that highly though :yeshrug:

He's sort of where he belongs imo. His name gives his projects some buzz, but it's not like he's a Spielberg/Fincher/Tarantino/Anderson/Scorsese....he's in the 2nd tier, but he's been there so long it feels like he should be better than he is :manny:

:comeon:

If we want an overrated thread, this is the man to focus on. There's no way he's in a top tier of directors. He and Spike are pretty much on the same level, even though they (usually) make entirely different types of films.

Malcolm X deserved an Oscar for best picture and director imo. Didn't even get nominated for either.

Do the Right Thing was the best film of '89 yet all Spike got was a best screenplay nomination. there's a story of how Kim Basinger spoke out about the film getting snubbed when she presented an award at the Oscars.

White people hate Spike's personality and that often skews their critiques of his films. If you look at a typical Spike Lee review, a lot of times the critic is focusing on Spike rather than the actual movie. Plus there are people who won't even watch a Spike Lee flick because they assume it's an anti-white race-baiting type movie

so if anything, Spike is underrated. And I love QT. His flicks are entertaining as hell. But his movies don't challenge me or make me think nearly as much as Spike's. The thing about Spike is that ALL of his movies will challenge you in some way, even his mediocre ones. With so many writer-directors focusing on being irreverent and not didactic, it's refreshing to see someone who's not afraid to send a message through his work.

Malcolm X should've gotten a nom for Best Picture and Director but Unforgiven was on another level.

Also

:leostare: at the white people hating Spike Lee.

Overrated by who? White people don't fukk with him and 90% of the movies he puts out are at least above average in quality with a few classics thrown in. That's more than u can say for the vast majority of directors.

What's the last good shyt he's done?

The 25th Hour and filmed the concert for The Kings of Comedy? :what:

The 25th Hour was kinda good, tho. I dunno if his life's goal is to keep it hood and not be a hollywood director, but he's succeeding at it.

Let's keep it real, tho. nikka wouldn't mean dikk if he ain't had courtside all these damn years :comeon:

I'm guessing you've never seen When The Levees Broke? shyt was powerful.

Tarantino isn't a top level director.

:dwillhuh:
Yes he is....he's resurrected more acting careers than most directors you can name. He takes chances with no-name or low level actors most directors wouldn't even give a chance. He has great vision, dialogue and music to the point you can almost instantly recognize that it's a QT movie or influenced by him or his screenplay. Look at the list of shyt he's done on IMDB...most directors wish they had a resume like that.

:smh: at Tarantino not being top level. I wish Spike would do more movies like Inside Man though.
