The problem with a lot of the people in this thread (and in particular, the threadstarter) is that they don't know the definition of the word 'Mecca'.
According to Google, the definition is: "A place that attracts people of a particular group or with a particular interest."
I don't know if New York is the Mecca of Basketball. I don't care. But that's the definition.
When I think about 'places' that 'attract people' to basketball, the first places that come to mind are Madison Square Garden and Rucker Park.

That SI article was premature if anything, all you really need to do is think of what position Parker will play in the NBA, and compare him athletically to them.
