Here's the underlying issue with NYC basketball, the kids get over hyped too soon, there have been better players coming out of Westchester county NY than NYC in the 00s yet you'd never know. And the coaches don't take chances with players in their development. A kid like Jabari Parker in NYC would have to play PF/C and nothing else, he'd never get a chance to play on the perimeter. Most of the kids with the athleticism and frame to play on the perimeter 6"5+ get funneled towards playing PF, even if they have the skillset to play on the perimeter. You see a lot of these husky 6"7 230lbs PF's coming out of NYC, great for the college game but they have little to no chance of making it to the league.
The hype thing is very real though, example, Julius Hodge won Mr. Basketball over Ben Gordon, simply cause he was from the city. Back in the day Artest and Odom got hyped over Elton Brand, even though he was a better prospect than them, and was rated higher than them nationally.
And there's always kids moving out of state, Andre Drummond lived in Mount Vernon for half his life, still reps it to this day. Things move in cycles, there will be a recruiting class that comes out of NYC that is very good, just like Toronto has seemed to hit the lotto lately. I do think you'll see more players coming from cities outside NYC like Mount Vernon, Portchester, Yonkers, White Plains etc soon, cause a lot of black people are moving north out of the city.
