Its a rushed album with BAD sequencing. The sequencing is what makes the album not so good it literally sounds all over the place.

I know that the og double album suffered a TERRIBLE leak and nobody really knew how internet bootlegging was going to affect artists sales at the time period but on hindsight if Nas would have went ahead and released the original Double Album it would have been an all time classic but instead we got one great album in I Am and a unfocused one in Nastradamus. I read that Nas speed recorded half that album in order to make the deadline.

Last Words & Life We Chose are still incredible songs

Life We Chose = Good
Project Windows = Very Good
Come Get Me = Good
Last Words = Very Good
Everything Else = Ranges from ass to mid, imo... Family is almost good...passable. You Owe Me is passable too maybe, depending on my mood.

It's the only Nas album I can say is boring. Front to back, it just has this lifeless, autopilot energy to it. I obviously know why, but I'm wondering what would have happened if Nas did what Columbia asked and put out Nastradamus with all the bootlegged songs.

There are some good songs, though, and "You Owe Me" is a classic radio song. :russ: at Ginuwine spazzing out with "You owe Nas! You owe Ginuwine, you owe Timbaland!"

you gave "come get me" a 6 and "you owe me a 7??? boy what the fukk are you smoking???

and this is why we had a discussion about the album while actually rating the songs.

You had 3 people on the podcast give "Last Words" a 7 while most people in here has that as a classic song (9 or 10)

2 people had Come and Get me as a 6 and 7 when most people in here have that a classic song. (9 or 10)

Album is polarizing more than anything else since most can't agree on which songs are great/classics.

By '99 standards, Nastradamus is still a mediocre album. In just the last part of 1999 alone, we had:

Internal Affairs
Black On Both Sides
2001
And Then There Was X

Two of those releases were on Rawkus, not a major and one was the rare major label release where the artist had almost 100% creative control and unlimited budget. I know there were plenty classics in this era, SC dropped a couple months later on a major and totally ignored the trends so not saying the era didn't produce great music, not making that argument.

But let's be real, this era where sample free keyboard beats, forced commercial crossovers and over the top thugged out shyt dominated mainstream NY hip hop and Nas let himself fall into those tropes on this album. And it's the only album where he sounds checked out on cruise control for long stretches. Clear his heart not in this album and the only reason the album exist is record label pressure to hit Q4 numbers.

Solid, decent, average, mediocre all basically interchangeable so yeah, it was mediocre, never said otherwise. It's bad by Nas standards. The usual stan overcorrections exist but in response to the over the top negativity surrounding it. You can see it here, you got dudes acting like the whole album is unlistenable trash without a single decent track. That opinion just as over the top as acting like it's a dope album.
