Because they were drafted 26 years apart. Thats like me comparing Roger Staubach stats to Brett Favre. The game has changed far too much in that time. Also Irvin blew his knee out as a rookie, so it too him like 2 years to get back to what he was. He also had a suspension in 96 which cost him six games, I believe. Then he was hurt with his career ending neck injury in 99. So for all intents and purposes, Mike really only played 6 or 7 full seasons.
Yeah I know. I'm not shytting in Irvin.

I have very specifically said I don't believe he's just a numbers compiler. I say he has had sustained longevity, while playing at a high level. The question is, has he played at a HOF level? I said if he gets in, I don't think it's horrible, but I just don't believe he's a HOF WR.

You're saying he's been a top 3-5 his entire career. That's what I disagree with. When I am listing "Not top 3-5" below, that is STRICTLY based on receiving yards. And, on quite a few of those, the range would get close to not top 5-15. I know the argument is going to be he doesn't need to be top 3-5 every season as some of those in the top 3-5 during those years had shorter primes, but I don't see how you are saying top 3-5 for his entire career.

2014: Not top 3-5.
2015: Not top 3-5.
2016: Top 3-5.
2017: Not top 3-5.
2018: Top 3-5 numbers wise.
2019: Not top 3-5.
2020: Not top 3-5.
2021: Not top 3-5.
2022: Not top 3-5.
2023: Not top 3-5

And, going back to the 1,000 milestone that many keep talking about. Here's how many WR's hit it each of these seasons:

2014: 23
2015: 26
2016: 25
2017: 15 (He was 15th and had 1,001 yards)
2018: 21
2019: 29
2020: 18 (He was 18th with 1,006 yards)
2021: 26
2022: 22
2023: 17 and counting

Mentioning these 1,000 yard seasons is just some arbitrary metric. Why don't we make it 1,400 yard seasons and see where the elite players stand? That's a LOT of players hitting 1,000 yards.

At the end of the day, I would take Mike Evans on the Patriots in a heartbeat. An excellent player for his entire career. Not a HOF player though.

Edit: Not even trying to be hard on Evans. I said I don't think it would be horrible if he made it. I think this thread shows it's a legitimate discussion.........
How is he not top 5 this year? He leads the league in TDs and is uncoverable in man

What problem is this?

Outside of Hopkins and Green all these players have had HOF QBs throwing them the ball most of their careers. Mike had 3 years of old Brady. Put him in New England or Green Bay who knows.

Eh...plenty of players outside of blueblood teams get All-Pro selections. Tampa not being good outside of Brady has more to do with it.
Just that he's likely in a log jam. Where he may be on the ballot for several years. Not that it's actually a problem to be like them.

I stated I was specifically talking about yards.

We were discussing 1,000 yard seasons, so that was the focus.

I'm not saying he's not playing as a top five WR this year.
yeah but when i’m talking about hall of fame credentials. The argument seems to be just cuz he barely got by 1,000 yards in some seasons means he wasn’t that dominant

Cuz if a nikka tells me that Michael Thomas at his peak was better than Evans cuz he had two back to back 1st team all pro seasons where he got manufactured touches in an efficient offense that let him move the chains at a whopping 11 yards per catch… I’m just gonna stop talking to you about football altogether

If you're talking about SlantMan, then I'm taking Evans over him every day of the week.

If Evans gets in, it's not criminal. I think there are legitimate arguments on both sides. I like Evans a lot, but I just don't think he's a HOF player. But, if he gets in, I understand.

Whether he barely got over 1000 yards or not, I cannot recall a time where Mike Evans was not the opponent's number one focus as far as gameplanning outside of when Brady got there. If a man is considered the "we need to stop this man before we do anything else if we want this W" for 7-8 years or more of his career, when he's never not crossed the "anything above this number means you're damn good or better" threshold, he's probably a HOFer.

The reason I think D-Hop is a HOFer is the same reason I think Evans is a HOFer. QB be damned, they're putting up numbers at a steady to elite level. I feel like a hall of famer is someone whose stats/productivity train stops for no man, regardless of what happens around them. Besides, Evans is on pace for another All-Pro season/consideration so he's going to be fine.

I want to say yes, but I feel like his production is more the effect of the passing inflation era not individual dominance

I lean towards yeah though

I think he gets in but he's going to end up waiting a few years. If he was on one of the premier franchises he'd likely be a first ballot.

I think he's similar to Witten. The stats are what they are. But in his era he's not likely in the group of guys you think of first at his position. And unlike Witten he's not getting that cowboy's bump.
