Idris Elba surpassed Will Smith but he's not better than Denzel yet.
Denzel played the better villain which was the height of his career. Alonzo > Stringer.

not true... he played south African activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom, played a British soldier in For Queen and Country. In the Mighty Quinn he played a Jamaican and has done Shakespeare in Much Ado About Nothing...all critically acclaimed performances.
He's done just about any and everything an actor can do in the span of 20-30 year career. Idris is solid but he's 40 and has a ways to go as far as notable performances.

Accent might have been shaky (especially cry freedom/diction in much ado) but you can never knock his "acting". Idris is still yet to have that career defining performance on film and has been living off stringer bell for dear life. Surprised this thread is actually a serious debate. Ppl say denzel plays the same roles but in those roles you will see many facets of that character cuz denzel can emote like a mother........ Idris (like many actors today) might play varying parts but are they memorable, do they stay with you? Dude has like 2 facial express, if he ain't squinting then he just looks exasperated, mediocre actor

I realized Elba was pretty solid after Luther.... and that was his own project where he could do him..... I would love to see Denzel have the reigns to do his own film/show starring himself
