No that would be Drake
He is independent but he's represented by CAA and those connections are as Hollywood s it gets: List of Creative Artists Agency clients - Wikipedia
first and foremost the times were different.
In the 80's/90's an artist had to do 1 verse and maybe a couple of features to get a deal. See Nas/BIG...etc.
In the 00's artists typically have to a lot of work on their own before they get a deal. So 1 verse in the 90's = 5 mixtapes in the 00's.
Also, Kendrick was signed much earlier than you think. He was moved to Interscope after Def Jam (he was signed in 05) since they are both Universal Music Group.
When Section 80 dropped in 2011 he was already Aftermath/Interscope, he just didn't have a big enough buzz for it to matter. Hence this video of him talking about Detox in 2010.
@Ninjaz In Paris is this true? He's not independent. He's been on Interscope since before Acid Rap.
Those guys were ridiculously talented and it was obvious.
Also, they honed their craft for YEARS behind the scenes. As it should be. Why put out garbage when you can work out most of the kinks in your basement?
that's what makes it all the more pathetic. He literally didn't pop until Dre showed up. With the Def Jam machinery and struggle mixtapes, still....no one gave a fukk till Dre. That's how you know a dude is actually trash.
Anyway, we've established that Kendrick's comeup is nothing like Snoop's, so at least there won't be any more struggle comparisons.
But he's not a major label artist. Maybe one could argue apple is a major label or will be one but right now, they're a distribution company in the music world. People think independent is no label, you owning your creations, etc, which is true about chance. He's just an incredibly popular independent rapper that is now too big to ignore.
It's a dope paradigm shift.
mind you, I am on your side. But understand that Dre showed up much earlier than you think and still no one gave a fukk about Kendrick .
this is Dre coming out to a Kendrick show before Section 80.
I don't mind ppl loving him. But, stop this "independent" nonsense.
Dude is arguably the 2nd to 3rd most popular rapper in the country, now.
It is not a paradigm shift. The labels are pushing a facade that is bad for your average artist. But he's not a major label artist. His dad worked for Obama's campaign, didn't think this was a 'secret'.* Supposedly "independent" artist is commissioned by ESPN to do the Ali tribute at the ESPY's
*Mixtape guest appearances has the biggest artists in the industry
*Commissioned by the White Sox to design another team logo.
*Is one of the few rappers to perform on "Ellen"
*Shown to be pals with Obama, Beyonce', Gwen Stefani.

Define "much earlier". Correct me if I'm wrong, but that video was at most a year before Section 80 came out. Whereas Kendrick had gone several years in total obscurity.
The reality is that Dre's part was massive. No one heard about Kendrick till Section 80. and Dre showed up right before then. That's plant shyt.
The argument isn't about him being traditionally signed. Of course he's not. What label is he signed to?
Kendrick was never obscure. He just didnt matter to the masses. In 09 everyone was overshadowed by Drake and Wayne. Kendrick even had a mixtape rapping on all of Wayne's beats in an attempt to get a buzz. Plus Jay Rock was supposed to be TDE's breakout around that time. He was signed to Warner in like 07 or 08.
You do know that Look out for Detox, came out before Section 80 did right?
