Is being "unattractive" holding a crop of r&b singers back from success?

Depends on what you mean by attractive. It could be said R&B stars of yester year weren't "attractive". They dressed nice and were well groomed. The problem is R&B as a whole is dead. There's nothing to help anyone find good R&B and nobody is making it anyway. Last R&B album I enjoyed was Jaheim's "Struggle Love".

plenty still are

i stayed away from naming non black artists for a veriety of reasons...coli goes left real fast on topics like that :hubie:

on that note you also got people like alina baraz who's bad AF but also not poppin

Galimatias laced her with straight heat on "Urban Flora". I'll say this though, her music is good, but nothing special in that it's easily copied. I think she was one of those people that got in early on what I consider this "ambient chill" type of music that is made for vibing, which, seems to be the direction R&B is headed.

Her album “the color of you” was amazing to me, showing me she could do it without galimatias. She runs in that lane well, whether others replicate it or not isn’t really an issue for her IMO since she’ll always be one of the handful who does it best.

Totally forgot about that album. It was good too, 'Urban Flora' just has an outsized impression on me.

She’s a whole lesbian out here

and def looks matter, I was thinking too bad ANDERSON.Paak and Sir are ugly as hell or else they could’ve been r and b sex symbols a la Maxwell.

I have never heard of anyone liking Anderson Paak in real life he wouldnt have been a symbol of any kind

Attractive or not, I'm just tired of the uninspired lyrics and repetitive crooning.

Most of all, for me, it seems like much of this new batch of R&B artists have no formal or even informal vocal training in their upbringing. No church choir, no lessons...nothing. Just pop up on the scene with a shyt voice and melancholy lyrics. :mjtf:

The fall off from the 2000s in this regard is wild :mjtf:

I'm just asking for R&B artists these days to actually be able to sing.:mjtf:

Great thread OP.

I recently was watching old making the band videos and looked at day 26 now and they're all :flabbynsick: except Willie, who's the most popular of them all.

Crazy part is their best singers were Robert, Mike, and Brian. But they all overweight and far from studs. I feel like that's the main reason they never got to be really successful. Diddy chose talent over looks when he should've found both.

Looking at the OP I don’t think it’s that the artist aren’t conventionally attractive, they just don’t make the type of music that fits in with the current radio landscape. I like a lot of their music and the sound, but you probably aren’t going to hear “Shea butter baby” after you hear the current trendy musice on a radio station. It’s just not what the masses are programmed to enjoy sonically right now unfortunately because the radio could def use more variety.

Snoh Aalegra had a fire album(my favorite album this year) and she looks like a damn supermodel. While she's somewhat popular, I wouldn't say she's well known by most. :yeshrug:

Women seem to think Lucky Daye is attractive and he hasn't gone over the top yet either. EDIT: His album was also fire.

Ol blockhead here?

Nah. She right where she need to be.
