Is being "unattractive" holding a crop of r&b singers back from success?

I just think r&b is losing and has lost mainstream appeal over the last decade.

Too many of these singers sound the same for one thing.

And they all sing like they're just too cool for school. Like they so afraid of making the Patti Labelle ugly face that they can't go in in

I think so yes, looks / sex appeal does play a major component, now I'm sure there are groups/ solos that did not tick those boxes but they're the minority

Snoh Aalegra had a fire album(my favorite album this year) and she looks like a damn supermodel. While she's somewhat popular, I wouldn't say she's well known by most. :yeshrug:

Women seem to think Lucky Daye is attractive and he hasn't gone over the top yet either. EDIT: His album was also fire.

2 people I never heard of. You have any examples of any good songs they got?

Philly
Xscape, doe.
Missy Elliott, doe.
Macy Gray, doe.
Jill Scott, doe.

I don't wanna keep going, doe.

Macy Gray was an alternative/soul hybrid - she was more for the white folk and black hippies
Missy was a ghostwriter for damn near a decade before she stepped in front of the camera
Xscape were cute enough, and wore baggy clothes that hid Meatball's frame. Then for album #2, Meatball went on the model diet and they tried to boost their sexy
Jill Scott was shown bust up, until she became a thing and her style of music really came to the forefront, and still ended up loosing hella weight

Faith didn't show her frame for like 2 whole albums
Erykah Badu was pretty

Looks will always matter in R&B. And what looks can't obtain, status, hits, and to a lesser extent, talent will make up for it...now you also have to add personality more than ever, because of the 24-7 access. The industry is the industry. The same can be said about movies.
