Is being "unattractive" holding a crop of r&b singers back from success?

This should tell you all you need to know

She looks like Alicia Keys circa 2001. Sleepy, glossy eyes and all.

In terms of attractiveness/unattractiveness, it depends on what type of artist they are. If they are making songs that are sensual/sexy in nature a certain amount of attractiveness must come with it to really sell it and make it believable.

If you're an artist that sings about struggle or pain, looks aren't going to matter much at all because people are gravitating to the content and conviction vs the physical image. Take Mary for example, she hid her face on her first three album covers. She's attractive, but it isn't what she was selling. Even when she showed her face on Mary, she didn't want her scar covered.

Artists these days just don't have the identity. They make songs, but don't know who they are or what they represent as artists. So you get this mismatch with the image and the music.

Snoh Aalegra had a fire album(my favorite album this year) and she looks like a damn supermodel. While she's somewhat popular, I wouldn't say she's well known by most. :yeshrug:

Women seem to think Lucky Daye is attractive and he hasn't gone over the top yet either. EDIT: His album was also fire.

There's a balance. If a woman is TOO pretty women won't fukk with her. This is a part of why artists like Christina Milian never get poppin

It’s funny because Women buy the records so in theory why would they care if the female singer is attractive
Relatability

If a singer reminds them of the baddest bytch in school that everybody hated on they're not gonna wanna hear you sing about falling in love or break ups

The ones that make it remind women of their peer group in some way, while glossing the fukk up in other areas

the question is this....why are there no more r&b groups like New Edition or Boys II Men???
aint enough paper for groups. they died in r&b and hip hop, migos and rae sremmurd and i guess city girls the only folks to try to revive/keep that shyt going and even all of them venture off and do solo stuff. plus for labels it costs way more to support groups - especially women - need multiple makeup artists and hair stylists on standby, more hotel rooms, buses, wardrobes etc required. that said, r&b is suffering from a lack of groups, nothing like harmonies melting together from voices that touch different registers, having different leads on songs bring something different to each song on an album

Because there are a million examples of beautiful women who had success and from whom most of their success came from their female fanbases.

Ciara
Beyoncé
Rihanna
Amerie
Keri Hilson (until she went at bey)
Mya
Jhene aiko

And so on...

Milian, like tinashe that some posters here like to points to, didn’t make music people cared about
