I think also A-Rod's struggles got magnified because of how Ortiz & 
always seemed to get that "big hit" for the Red Sox in those same situations. Yankee fans expected A-Rod to have that same ice water in his veins.

The contract really was about
a) The $$$ the Janks thought they'd get from his HR chase of Bonds, which at that time was real possibility
b) He was an absolute monster in the 2007 regular season, MVP award and without him that team doesn't come close to making the playoffs. Easily the worst team of the Torre Era. So the thought of A-Rod not being there was really scary.

He's an idiot though. He has a revolutionary contract that has made him the highest paid player in the game just about every year he has played yet he seems to get freaked out by expectations that he should actually live up to that salary.
