Certain characters need plot armor, even Martin with Arya and Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, sure he had a lot of us going with killing Drogo, and other fan favorites, but he says it himself, you have to stop trying to subvert expectations, or else the story is lost, and you're creating twists chapters and murder porn all for the sake of coming off original. So yes, some characters have to be safe. However in the Boys, its less about who's going to die and more about loss...essentially who has more to lose and how they lose it. For some its their sanity...for others its a child, a loved one, or even fame. Character death doesn't happen only in the literal sense.

This is a cop out to me.

Having characters, especially villains, act out of character or doing dumbass things for the sake of progressing the story should always be called out. Write the shyt better.

You just described every villain in the entirety of gaming. When did you see the last smart antagonist in gaming? This was the problem even in GOAT shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc. Its not bad writing, its lazy, and or one dimensional. Sometimes people are that dumb/predictable. It happens in all media is my point. Or else, like many authors have written about; when you try to subvert expectations that much, you lose sense of the story, and now you're working on the next twist, instead of character development. A perfect example of this is Dexter. It did both really well, subvert expectations and made the opposition, dumb. One needs to find the happy marriage of both (Breaking Bad).

The first season of The Boys was great, but I’ve noticed that there’s a huge element of deus ex machina when it comes to the protagonist of the show. They’re never really in danger and that takes a lot from the show for me.

They removed what made the boys something to be feared in the comics for some reason. The butcher should be seen as a monster that rivals homelander and makes homelander second guess crossing lines. As homelander is right now, he's just unchecked power free to do whatever he wants, but doesn't because of fame. That's weak.

I suspect/hope they’ll finally take compound V in season 3 and develop super powers

Boys was better as a comic. first season of invincible was great but the storylines apart from Omniman's own are not that captivating to me. I enjoyed Preacher way more as an adaptation to a tv series from a comic than i did with The Boys and i loved that comic. As far as adaptations go

-Punisher
-Watchmen
-Preacher
-The Boys.

Where do you rate Invincible among them below The Boys?

Only watched the first ep of "Invincible" but I was pretty :ld: towards it.

The swerve at the end was cool but when a series premiere is only good or talked about because it's last 2-3 minutes....I dunno. This shyt was hyped to high heaven, I expected more from the first ep.

Obviously this has no bearing on the rest of the reason. The rest of the eps could be GOAT status, I'm just going off my initial impression.

And I dunno what cats are talking about criticizing "The Boys" season 2. The way they skewered Trump/MAGA with Homelander/st0rmfr0nt and their movement was incredible.

Fred.

Yeah I’m genuinely confused by the people badmouthing season 2 in here. People calling the characters cartoonish yet st0rmfr0nt is probably the most realistic depiction of a modern day “edgy” racist that I’ve seen on a show or movie.

I watched the first two episodes of Invincible. Very entertaining show but it’ll have to level up considerably for me to put it above the Boys which managed to be entertaining and thought provoking without being didactic

The way both St0rmfr0nt and Homelander were defeated was lame and not realistic. And they ruined a lot of the realism they built within the context of the show with The Boys supposedly being like Most Wanted but Hughey and Mother's Milk going on road trips with a world famous suoer hero like it's nothing.

Not sure what you mean by "defeated".

st0rmfr0nt was outed as an actual Nazi, then Homelander's son damn near killed her.

Homelander never took an L, dude still runs the 7 and his public image was never even tarnished.

If you're talking about him backing down from Queen Maeve :yeshrug: not seeing how that's not realistic. Dude is obsessed with how his "fans" see him. Half the season revolved around that.

The Boys was enjoyable until the last two episodes of season 1 imo.. Didn't like how that season ended and season 2 was difficult to watch. It's hard to immerse yourself in a show that requires so much suspension of disbelief. The acting is phenomenal but the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

I think they’re both a little overrated tbh. I like both but currently they are getting carried but the hype of the layman not being used to gore in these superhero IPs. Both very shock value dependent. Like I enjoyed Invincible but a ton of the hype I’ve been seeing it based solely on people being shook

I absolutely love both shows.

If I HAVE to pick I'll take The Boys. A little less mature sure, also a lot less predictable. But not even a spoiler (looked into the comic, never read it) could ruin that finale for me.
The thing is about The Boys that it isn’t following the comic at all. The finale will be completely different. Invincible seems to follow the comic but more condense.
