What does that mean though? Realistically.... what can really be done for Manchin to be a yes? He's the 50th vote... He's not the 53rd vote.
You can trash him but what does that do? He won't be shamed into voting.. he's shown that he's already shameless.
Manchin was never going to be a Yes. Biden's strategy of coddling Manchin doesn't get him any closer to a Yes. Taking a more antagonistic tack towards Manchin wouldn't have gotten him to a yes either, but it would have given Democrats the ability to channel anger and whip up sentiment, a path that was neutered by Biden's strategy. Ironically, this would have given them the best chance at building a more robust Democratic majority, which would have made Manchin less relevant, which is ironically what these same coddling Democrats are scolding progressives about. But from a potentially apathetic voter's perspective, what are a bunch of scared, non-confrontationalists going to do with more margins? If they can't even be bothered to fight now, why would sympathetic people vote to keep them in power? This is how apathy is built.
The problem is that this era of establishment Democrats are habitually terrified of Democracy and actually governing, they have been since Reagan kicked their ass. They fundamentally just don't believe they have the legitimacy of American public support, they believe this is a country of latent Reaganites, so they run away from aggressive, populist sentiments or proactively taking a fighting stance, instead choosing to shy away from any actions that can actually draw attention or going on the offensive. They're just naturally more comfortable being on the backfoot and reacting to the right. So it's unthinkable for them to do bold or aggressive things. And even when they do lean towards doing those things, they immediately couch it in the language of technocracy to douse any potential stirrings, because once people see that you can actually do things, you're on the hook for doing more things in the future. FDR would have kicked Manchin's ass in public. Even if that wouldn't get Manchin to a Yes, it would have shown the people that Democrats are worth a damn and willing to
fight for them. Trying and failing is a better electoral strategy than not trying at all.
