Nah this a step above hostel. You get your own room, like a hotel. Except you're booking from a person, not a hotel chain (some apertments/homes I've stayed at were nicer than 4-star hotels). I say its better than a hotel as you get kitchen access and personal tour guide etc.

Wow, this is exactly what i needed. Hotels were a little bit too expensive but Hostels were garbage since you gotta share rooms with random nikkas from all over.

Make sure you tell them that before-hand - that you're going to see a friend and if its ok if you have them over. It's always better to be straighforward about possible guests. That's what I did and they were pretty much cool with whoever I brought over.
You can always book for two people if you're not so sure. Only a little extra.
I'm assuming the ones that say "request to book" aren't exactly open right?? I didn't find one exactly in Kanazawa though yet.

Where are you going by the way? I travel a lot so I can give you money saving tips. The only thing that should break your bank on a trip is flight cost. Everything else should cost you very little if you know what you're doing.
Btw props to you for wanting to travel, it's worth whatever the cost and expands your mind.You'll be better for it. Just travel smarter (You should never be booking a hotel if on a budget). No need to sell your PS4 and the like.

If dude could really afford this trip he wouldn't be waiting on a check to have enough and wouldn't be selling off his possessions.
This is beyond living outside your means especially when credit exist in the modern world. Just because you can do something and you can make a path to it doesn't mean you should.
