I suggest trying to get one from a kill shelter, that way you’re saving one from possibly being put down, if you get one from a person selling them privately make sure 100 percent of the age, a lot of scumbags out there that will lie to get them sold quickly and before they should be taken away from the mother, this happened to me and long story short the kitten died and I was left with a $1500 vet bill.

Being that cat's are self sufficient should I get it a bed or will he/she pick a spot in the apartment to sleep

They usually will not take to the bed you bought them till they like ten years old. Unless you just try to get him to sleep there early on.
Just try to make sure you understand how a cat hides and how your crib is setup before you get one.
Things like couchs, duct openings, crevices. Try to see if there are dangers to them exploring before you get one. Remember they can fit through shyt damn near a mice could but that overconfidence gets them in precarious predicaments in a house setting. if not surveyed properly.

Mine loves kids. She just watches them for the most part. If they’re old enough to be chill she’ll let them pet her or pick her up. If they’re erratic or small she will just watch them from somewhere they can’t reach her.

Some can be a$$holes because their prey drive is kind of connected to their playing. If a kid is running they may get overstimulated and E-Honda, hundred hand slap a kid up.

My cat is a lot more gentle with kids than my dog, who gets overexcited.
