No one outside the west sees race in the same way we do. For all intents and purposes you're seen as a "white" person too.

I was in England back in the day and these white south Africans invited me to a "independence day" party (meaning the old aparthied independence day party and one of them thought it might be a bad idea. These were white people who dipped because they couldn't stand majority rule.
yup everybody is seen as American, I feel like if you are african, eastern european or south asian, people will look as you as poor, but if you are american you are seen with money. I know there is still racism but I feel like nationality means more outside of America.

I'll drop some pro tips because this is not a "move to the DR brehs" thread it's more of a get in where you fit in thread.
When deciding where to live obviously you want to do your research knowing what is the cost of living and if the country will be a good fit for you.

The first place I'd start is the expat groups in that country and even that city. there might even be an ADOS expat group there's a Black expats of Colombia facebook group. Start with Facebook, then Twitter, follow the newspaper of record in the country twitter then local reporters. Usually a country will have their official "haters" meaning local people who live there and complain about their country. There tweets are gold they will give you a feel about how life is on a day to day basis.

Follow business news related twitter accounts too. You follow decent local news then compare that to the news about the country that the international press reports and you'll see huge differences. shyt will open you minds to biases in the media. Not just left right biases but shyt slated to fit a narrative like US media reports about the Chinese "taking over" Africa.

There's ajendas to all media.
the expat black group I followed was was haterish when I talked about Doha imo.

@Wiseborn how much cash do you carry on you on average and what would you recommend for someone traveling to the DR? How do you go about getting cash in the local currency? Is it one main stop at the airport or how does that work?

Look now take as much time as you need. I checked out Travel youtubers way before I even considered traveling myself.

I know a guy in Kuwait right now. I was tempted to hang my hat in Bahrain but the lack of a security clearance fukks me up. I don't want a job working for a local company. That being said it's pretty easy to get a job in Abu Dhabi as opposed to Dubai but you're super monitored there, Don't take an Iphone to the Gulf.

I'm retired.

The hiring process depends on your field and the ability to get a working visa.

They monitor what you do on your phone in your personal time?

absolutely. They mainly want to keep you from fukking their women and also because they are police states.

I was told by nikkas over there contracting that the what's app game is on a another level basically you might be slipped a number and a chick might hit you up to smash. but the downside was you had to be ready and willing to smash what came through the door. A chick could be old, fat or ugly or she could be a dime.

The other reason they monitor everything is to keep you safe. Because no one talks about it but If you're over there in non tourist areas you're probably working for their government or the US Government and liable to get the hassan chop from a Terrorist.

One thing nobody ever considers but totally should is the culture especially how similar it is to your culture.

For example They have ballads here in the DR but basically every night it doesn't rain they'll play Reggaeton, Bachata Salsa and their version of Trap music. In neighborhoods there's a party every night it doesn't rain. It's cool but It can get annoying at times.

What a lot of people don't know is that Africa plays their music (and some of it is cool) but generally the upscale spots play Old school Soul music. They play rap too but almost always without the cussing or the gun tunes or expilict sexual songs. I guess they can't relate to the gun tunes. I've been to a lot of countries and it's nice to hear your music being played. I go to Art Cafe (you should try their apple pie ala mode) and they pipe in a lot of neo soul stuff.

They listen to stuff like that and Reggae.

One other thing is Africa is the most from Harlem place you can be without being in Harlem. In my almost two years in Africa I didn't see one gay person. It's not discussed at all. It's like it's an alien concept. The only time I heard it mentioned was when there was a big human rights convention and they talked about How Kenyatta (the current President) Check Obama for trying to bring up gay rights and again he didn't say the word gay. He said something like Do try to change our culture.

The DR is pretty gay friendly, You seen trans people and even when playing rap, You might have a nikka twerking, in the club. I don't think it's gay, to them but it's pretty not from Harlem activity to me.

One downside to being an Expat is that you don't have the same Customer protections that you have in the States.

I've been catching flights from to and through Africa and everywhere with no problems. But getting a flight from one of the most visited countries in the world there's a problem. Everywhere else I pick the cheapest non stop flight i can get. I did that on a DR to Colombia flight and I got a flight with Wingo Air.

It's like Soul Plane come to life Their colors are even purple and white. First of all they share a terminal with Inter Carribean Airlines and they wouldn't print my ticket or check my bags. Then there was a Five hour delay (they didn't tell me this) So a was pissed. The supervisor just stopped me from boarding. ( I usually get on the plane last)

I had to get a chargeback from my card. I caught a another ticket but I actually went an purchased it from a sales office.

Be careful about getting the cheapest thing you can get in accomodations, food, electronics and flights Most stores don't offer refunds.

Another thing to worry about is

Beware of hidden fees. I'm an Airbnb superhost myself and one way to make money is to charge lower fees or agree to a lower price but then charge for service fees.

Most things Overseas are this way, You can fukk up a vacation budget but not checking fees, Booking'.com although being "better" than Airbnb on price and defenitely better about cancellations charges way higher fees. That being said If I were booking a Hotel I'd use Booking.com

Same thing with Airlines there's a departure tax (yes these countries literally charge you to go back home) but the checked bag hustle is getting out of control. Seriously check the bag fees before buying a ticket. usually you can reserve a ticket before you actually but it. That will show the extra fees.

Don't assume that local Airlines are that much cheaper than the major Airlines.
