son. lyrical format = literary devices. i just couldn't remember the right words. sue me.

either way, you shytting on nas while praising lupe (who i also think is a lyrical monster) but check it, i can just post these lupe lyrics right here from his debut LP and let you tell me how this is so far ahead of what nas was doing on illmatic:

Lusssst... sometimes can override trusssst
She said that's why she gave it up
My man said blood spilled out of everything he tou-chhhhed
He crushed everything he crushed
Ruined everything he loved, he just wanted to rushhhhh
Blamed it on the times bein rough
Doin dirt, with the devil, chasin after the dusssst
Make a fussss, if it's them, but we hushhh, if it's us

Lifffffe... ain't meant to come around twiiiice
Yeah, that's why I gotta get it right
They said I got it honest now I gotta give it LIFE
But sleep on it, that's why God give you night
I mean, I had a dream that, God gave me FLIGHT
Too fly for my own good so, God gave me plight

If I wake up in the mornin now I gotta give 'em SIGHT
Make 'em see, break 'em free, ain't a G, sho' you right

Struggle... yeah yeah, another sign that God love you
Cause on the low, bein po', make you humble

Keep they names in my rhymes to try and keep them out of trouble
Cause bein po', also teach you how to hustle
All they want is some shoes or some rims for they bubble
Now that I got my own, I can hit them with a couple
Couple, my homies so they ain't got no reason to cuff you
That's my plan, if I can, on the man, up above you

Ah yes, "Real"

the first thing I want you to notice is that line one works with line two, line three works with line four etc... its each segment isnt some hodge podge of lines with no context. He isnt jumping around from subject to subject on every line making the verses cohesive. They actually belong together in the song. And the verses help to build what's "Real"

Now, Ive bolded what I would consider examples of lyricism. See how Lu reversed order of the actions/way at looking at the situation? So instead of just flyin, he was given plight so he would use the gift of flight that was given him. Subtle difference but not straight forward.

I think that song is a good mix of poetic writing and lyricism. Now imagine if line 2, instead of "She said that's why she gave it up" we had "I just pick up the mack an bust" then we would have what naS was doing on illmatic. You see how picking up the mack and bustin has nothin to do with Lust overriding trust?

Notice how there's no forced rhymes, it all just came naturally, normal everyday speech. Lets take this line:

They said I got it honest now I gotta give it LIFE
But sleep on it, that's why God give you night

what naS was doin on illmatic he woulda had somethin like:

They said I got it honest now I gotta give it LIFE
blunted escapin NYPD in the honda civic trife

its obvious that trife was added to the end to make it rhyme... or rhyme better. the word trife adds absolutely nothing to the bar, its there just to match. naS did a lot of that on illmatic.

But thats just Real, look at Theme Music to a Driveby or even I Gotcha and I could really show you the difference.

theme music to a drive by wasnt on the album.

also, peep:

how exactly does he go from speaking about a girl giving it up to his dude who crushed everything? i mean, those two things aren't even related. he just saying it cause it sounds good.

then in the second verse he talking bout a dream he had, speaking to god. now he might have had a dream he could fly but that shyt was just a dream. Dreams aint real, how is that got anything to do with the theme of the song which is giving em something "real", but instead he talking bout dreams. not only that but he opened the album talking bout "give em something real" then he goes into the album and tells stories of zombies, giant robots, he had everyone thinking he was a skateboarder, how is any of that "real"? the whole album was incoherent.

How do u say the OP is trying hard when this album is supposed to be the greatest display of lyricism in Hip Hop history? :why:

The praise this album gets warrants this critical analysis

I rap for listeners, blunt heads, fly ladies and prisoners
Hennessey holders and old school nikkaz, then I be dissin a
unofficial that smoke woolie thai
I dropped out of Coolie High, gassed up by a cokehead cutie pie
Jungle survivor, fukk who's the liver
My man put the battery in my back, a difference from Energizer

 a bunch of garbage

Sentence begins indented.. with formality
My duration's infinite, moneywise or physiology
Poetry, that's a part of me, retardedly bop
I drop the ancient manifested hip-hop, straight off the block

definitely retardedly "you sound retarded to me" - :scusthov: The fukc is "ancient manifested hip hop"? this nicca just makin up shyt as he goes...

I reminisce on park jams, my man was shot for his sheep coat
Childhood lesson make me see him drop in my weed smoke

:obama:

It's real, grew up in trife life, did times or white lines
The hype vice, murderous nighttimes, and knife fights invite crimes
Chill on the block with Cog-nac, hold strap

some more word salad...

with my peeps that's into drug money, market into rap
No sign of the beast in the blue Chrysler, I guess that means peace
For nikkaz no sheisty vice to just snipe ya
Start off the dice-rollin mats for craps to cee-lo
With sidebets, I roll a deuce, nothin below (Peace God!)
Peace God -- now the shyt is explained
I'm takin nikkaz on a trip straight through memory lane
It's like that y'all .. it's like that y'all .. it's like that y'all

a nicca just sayin whatever comes to mind, no point or coherency... nicca wastin beats at this point.

One for the money
Two for p*ssy and foreign cars
Three for Alize nikkaz deceased or behind bars
I rap divine Gods check the prognosis, is it real or showbiz?

some throw away bars but it was an opening to a verse so i'll let it slide

My window faces shootouts, drug overdoses
Live amongst no roses, only the drama, for real
A nickel-plate is my fate, my medicine is the ganja

not bad, the nicca might be on to somethin, lets see what happens next

Here's my basis, my razor embraces, many faces
Your telephone blowin, black stitches or fat shoelaces
Peoples are petrol, dramatic automatic fo'-fo' I let blow
and back down po-po when I'm vexed so

back to the words to match... complete garbage. WTF are you talkin about nicca?

my pen taps the paper then my brain's blank
I see dark streets, hustlin brothers who keep the same rank
Pumpin for somethin, some uprise, plus some fail
Judges hangin nikkaz, uncorrect bails, for direct sales

not bad, but what the fukc is "uncorrect?" that shyt aint a word niccaz.

My intellect prevails from a hangin cross with nails
I reinforce the frail, with lyrics that's real
Word to Christ, a disciple of streets, trifle on beats
I decifer prophecies through a mic and say peace.

this nicca not talkin about shyt again... just writin the first BS that pops into his head.

I hung around the older crews while they sling smack to dingbats
They spoke of Fat Cat, that nikka's name made bell rings, black
Some fiends scream, about Supreme Team, a Jamaica Queens thing
Uptown was Alpo, son, heard he was kingpin, yo

okay, whatever... it aint lyrical.

fukk 'rap is real', watch the herbs stand still
Never talkin to snakes cause the words of man kill
True in the game, as long as blood is blue in my veins
I pour my Heineken brew to my deceased crew on memory lane

:trash:

This is getting tired now. You're just chiming in every 3 or 4 bars and writing "garbage" or "that ain't lyrical". You're not making any attempt to analyze the lyrics in good faith.

In a way, I envy you. Through your own obstinance and ignorance, you have one of the most (if not the most) lyrical albums still out there untapped for you. At some point, maybe, you'll begin to understand the brilliance of the lyrics and it'll be like you're hearing Illmatic for the first time. And there are few things in this life better than hearing Illmatic for the first time.

I'm not going to read anymore of the thread since you're just wasting everyone's time at this point.

Few things...

Theme Music was on the Advance...

Secondly, in my post I said, 1st bar related to the second, 3rd line related to 4th because I knew you wouldnt be able to see the connection between the 1st 4 despite being clear.... bein a naS fan and all

The two segments youre referring to are related...

the bish allowed her lust to override the trust allowing herself to fukc this nicca who was destroyin everything he fukced (think Big Pun, I'm not a player I just crush a lot)... he crushed (destroyed) everything he crushed (fukced)

see, you are confirming my suspicions that naS fans arent up to the task of actual lyricism. Thats why they think illmatic is somehow seeing Reasonable Doubt lyrically. You simply dont get it. I see it all the time with naS stans.

@ the 2nd part of the post :laff:

definitely :umad:

I'm bout to bust down these weak ass lyrics since a lot of dummies think monkey rhythm flipper rappers is dope... I got nothin else to do but watch the NCAA's until about 4PM so I may even expose other bum ass rappers or just more ga'bage ass naS lyrics

naS stans have a 1st row seat...

Nas - illmatic (Full Album) HQ [1994] - YouTube

to be continued...
"You a [phallus]-riding [maricon], you love the attention..."...:ahh:...
"Making silly [threads], I'm always on his mind..."...:ahh:...
