If you're a dark skinned female music artist, you won't sell albums in America

Granted they don't outsell the beyonces and the Rihanna's but both have been in the game since they were teens

Jazmine Sullivan

None of those people sell. LH album came out in the 90's, brandy hasn't been selling since the 90's. Kelly hasn't had a hit since her song with nelly. Her solo career is a struggle. People don't buy jazmines music. None of them top charts or sell a significant number of albums anymore.

Nobody is selling in 2015 as they did back then.

Your thread has been easily debunked.

Though your sentiment is correct. Mainstream America doesn't like dark skin.

His thread has not been debuked. Op is right. No one is selling except for bey rih and nicki. They are all light.

Why would they when you guys put more into women like Beyoncé than Kelly?
Again, Beyonce is more talented than Kelly. The problem here is that Beyonce fits the "mold" of what people think is somebody who just gets by on her looks and that she's light skinned. NO. That chick is super talented and works her azz off. And she has a star quality about her. From day one you could see it over all the other Destiny Child chicks. I think people get too caught up in the light skinned vs. dark skinned thing. How about Diana Ross? Same complexion as Kelly, but back in the day she WAS Beyonce. There were other talented light skinned girls out there like Tammi Terrell, but Diana Ross was King. Lets give credit where credit is due.

The thread title says dark skin women can't sell, the OP specifies in the last 20 years.

Both these assertions have been debunked.

Now if you wanna say in 2015 the most popular R&B women are light skinned, that would be more accurate. And really I wouldn't consider Beyoncé "light" and all three of them have very African features(until nicki started ruining her face) it's not like they are mixed/ambiguous looking high yellow chicks.

And there are a couple more brown skin artist that are fairly successful today. They just don't play on "urban" radio.

Not this time around :manny:

But it's cool, that shyt ain't gonna happen to R&B and Rap. The usa don't got that type of time left...

Yeah that shyt is true. America already going through its sunset era where ratchetness and degradation of character is commonplace. Black artists and black folk in media will soon disappear forever when Obama leave office and be further pushed back into irrelevance like Native Americans

:dahell:

Yeah the usa is in it's sunset phase. But it would take atleast 40 more years for black folk to disappear from the media. And the usa ain't gonna be around in 40yrs.

Why can't dark skinned women sell music in America?

Only person in the last 20 years to do any sort of numbers is Jennifer Hudson, and she barely does ok given her immense talent. (I've heard white women say her voice is "manly") :sas2:

Beyonce
Rihanna
Nicki Minaj (bleached)
Aaliyah
Alicia Keys

....those are really the only black women to sell albums in the last decade or two. And they are (were) all light.

Besides Whitney back in the day, there really aint nobody selling unless you got a capuccino skin tone.

It's fuucked up

(Thread topic only came to mind because I was listening to that SWV joint from my Above The Rim thread in the film room) :whoa:

Dark women haven't been selling and that is the truth. Go find 10 dark african american/black only singers who have been on the top of the billboard list since the late 2000's. I bet you can't.

Beyonce is light and always calls herself creole.

On her loreal commercial, she had afam, french, and native american as her race/ethnicity.

rihanna is light as well, and so is nicki. They used to give beyonce and rihanna spray tans sometimes. Google it. Nicki is light brown, she does not have dark skin.
