Personally, if im stationary and they're the ones going by, i do the down nod. If i'm outside and moving, I do the up nod. No idea why tho

the up versus down debate is an especially tough one when you are middle age. I be standing there trying to calculate age differentials in my head. I usually nod up if I nod first. If the other person nods first then I'll nod the same way they did. To me that symbolizes that I see and recognize them.
