No it wasn't that according to jr . They thought Bart had a chance :heh: I think they were suppose to do the hybrid kind of rules and he was like :camby: Bart wasn't going to beat a trained boxer in a shoot boxing match

I can't believe JR on this one. Dude was pretty much riding hard for Dr. Death. He was probably mad as fukk when Bart Gunn knocked out his boy :manny:

I legit never even heard about this at all. So basically they told the participants to fight seriously then got mad when their boy got knocked out?:ohhh:
No he was only jrs boy and a lot of the boys were rooting against him . they felt it was a setup for him to win and I think he even bragged that he had been paid winner money before it was over . Bob holly was saying it I think

No it was him and Bob holly talking about it . I'm sure jr wanted him to win but I think wwe just thought he would win , they didn't punish Bart they didn't have plans for him

WWE basically sharked a boxing program that was on in the 90's called Toughman. The show had untrained fighters who were just considered tough guys. Needless to say there was really no sweet science to it, just guys basically throwing haymakers trying to knock each other out.

Bart's shoot with RF video was really interesting about all this:

- Apparently Bart offered to work it so that Steve would win, since he knew they had hopes for him. They smugly said "that won't be necessary"

- He then asked if he'd get heat once he beat him. They said no, then the office spread it around that Bart claimed he would knock Doc out.

- Knocked him out, said JR and everyone else were mad. Said Doc and JR claimed he pulled a hamstring, and that's why he got caught. Said he after he watched Doc's first fight, he knew he'd dispatch him easily.

- Said that when he knocked out JBL (I think?), they were mad that he knocked him out with a right instead of left, since he'd been landing shots/knocking guys out with his left and commentary had been building.

- For Butterbean fight, people got it in his head to ditch the sloppy toughman style and actually try proper technique. Had a boxing coach, but realized you can't learn much in 6 weeks. Slimmed down and got into great shape. Apparently Butterbean wanted an agreement that there were no take downs, standing only. The rest is history.

Funny thing about Brawl-4-All is...

1) I had to be about 12 or so when it happened and I didn't question it at all. I was just like, "Yeah, sure. Boxing and shyt in the WWF. Why not?"

Makes me wonder what older fans thought about it.

2) I can't really imagine them doing anything similar to that now. Are there enough non-protected legit tough guys to field a tournament? You couldn't put Sheamus, Cena, Reigns, Orton, or Rollins in it. This locker room seems like they'd be too friendly to REALLY scrap.

Dr. Death couldn't have gotten over in WWF, too stiff. They'd have given him the Vader treatment no matter what, a bytch like Shawn or HHH would complain to Vince about him being unsafe in the ring.

fukk those dudes.

How far do you think he could've went?

Would he have been fueding with Austin? Seems they wanted to push him heavy as the whole Brawl for All tournament seemed set up to establish Williams as a legit tough guy, and JR was behind him.

I always thought he had a cool look and was disappointed it didn't work out. Even as a midcard enforcer for the corporation or ministry could've worked well.

was it me or did that Brawl for All just pop up outta nowhere. Like they didn't announce it a week beforehand as a new thing or nothing. Just started on RAW randomly one night. :heh::mjlol:

Far as Dr. Death, wasn't he pretty much past his prime at that point? I mean I remember when I was a kid he was possibly as his peak. So by that point he wasn't going to be main eventing. Unless JR just really got in Vince's ear.

Yeah, his peak was during the territorial days (I had no idea he had a 10 year long unbeaten streak), or his stint in Japan. Depends on how you look at it.

First wrestler I ever saw do a running powerslam. I didn't know he was dead.:mjcry:

I don't think he would have gone far at all, since his style was not at all suited for the Attitude Era. He had very few guys to work with and had absolute zero promo skills, which was the most important thing to have in that era.

I never really believed he was set to feud with Austin at any point.

This was one of the first things that truly blew apart kayfabe for me. I'd known for years that wrestling was a work, but I'd never really thought about the fact that means there's a group of people sitting around desks deciding exactly what would happen and that they could fukk it up just like the Dynasty writers. I only really got the whole backstory about Dr Death being 'chosen' way afterwards... to me and my friends watching WMXV (we were all 16/17) we honestly thought Brawl For All was an actual shoot and we were HYPED to watch the final. WM fell in school holidays and I think it's the biggest crowd I've watched one with. When Butterbean decimated Bart Gunn in 30-odd seconds we were all basically left thinking "So, the proven best fighter in WWF only lasts seconds against a boxer that nobody outside of the US has heard of? What is this shyt?"

It not only ruined Bart Gunn, it threatened Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Steve Blackman and obviously Steve Williams.. all the people we were told were "legit" fighters.

We could talk about WWE fukk ups and miscalculations all month... but NOTHING threatened to ruin my respect for wrestlers like this one.

Just typing this out has made me realise I'm STILL mad about this.
