So the Marvel movies are good because they are light hearted and fun and don't take themselves too seriously in the true spirit of the comics

But Superman is a joke comic because he doesn't deal with the tough social issues? :patrice:

I'm not a comic book reader brehs, how do we explain this contradiction? :hula:

The version of Superman that came on the heels of Watchmen was the John Byrne re-invention and that version of Superman was made even more human than he had been up to that point. Nothing about Dr. Manhattan as a character bled into the portrayal of Superman.
Now Watchmen made pretty much every comic book writer try to write more layered, complex and adult super-heroes but there was no direct reaction by Superman writers especially not in relation to the character of Dr. Manhattan.

even if the reaction wasn't immediate, surely you could see why one might credit watchmen as the inspiration though right? did anyone ever explore that aspect of the superman character PRIOR to watchmen being released?

also while we're on the topic doesn't BVS look like it heavily borrows from watchmen as well?

I addressed that in my post, homie. All comics were influenced by Watchmen, not just Superman and nothing specific to Dr. Manhattan was influential in any changes to the Superman comic.
And BvS borrows heavily from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight...y'know the other seminal genre changing graphic novel from the 1980s that influenced the entire comic book industry after its release.

The re-imagining of superman as an existential threat to human beings comes directly from Dr. Manhattan.
