The problem is is that no one bytched at captain america for killing nazis or running around clapping people with a pistol.That's why I said adapt "Kingdom Come". It perfectly addresses this exact argument.
I feel you on everything you're saying but you can't anti-hero certain characters. Some characters are just "good guys", like Captain America or Superman. And "The Winter Soldier" was so it's obviously possible to make a compelling good guy movie. I liked "Man Of Steel" but it didn't feel like a Superman movie.

Man of Steel touched on the isolation and searching for a greater purpose that many writers only briefly touch upon. They had to go with a different approach because Singer tried to make Brandon Routh be Reeves in Superman Returns and it didn't perform to well.
