I just don’t understand you were with the team in 98 when the arguably best team ever assembled was here.

I understand times changes and you have to keep up but how do you not try to follow that recipe as close as possible? Add in the stats etc but who should really keep the philosophy as similar as possible.

Cashman is a clown
Same reason AJ smith fired Marty Schottenheimer as the chargers coach after a season with I think 13 pro bowlers, the league mvp, a great young qb on the rise, & an AFC best 14 wins only to replace him with a guy who crashed and burned disastrously in their own division the year before and who’d been a terrible head coach on multiple teams.

Same reason that Jerry Krause fired Phil Jackson after 6 titles in 8 years and going into 1997-98 told him “I don’t care if it’s 82-0. After this season you’re fukking gone.” while also beefing with Scottie and MJ while at the same time Michael was on record saying he’d only play for Phil.

Same reason Jerry Jones chased Jimmy Johnson out of Dallas after back to back super bowls (note that in the 29 years since we’ve seen just 2 teams go back to back with Denver in 97-98 and New England in 2003-04).

Ego, narcissism, arrogance, and insecurity. Winning isn’t enough for them. Has to be done entirely their way and on their terms so nobody else gets a large share of the credit. They all thought they were the star of the team and all of them ruined something great.

Since he was probably not particularly involved in any way in putting the 1998 team together I doubt he had a clue what made them work and I’m sure that it eats away at him that he gets no credit for a 3-peat. I’d love to know what their thought process was behind promoting him given that since day 1 he’s shown us nothing and he’s been there since before the Mark McGwire & Sammy Sosa home run chase began. Barry Bonds was still kinda skinny back then.

Because Cashman jumped on a train that was moving 100mph, a team that was in the first year of a three-peat. With a manager that had the Midas touch.
He had very little to do with that 1998 squad, arguably the best team ever.
Cashman needs to be judged from 2001-2008, once guys like Oneil, Martinez, Mendoza, Brosius, Pettitte, Stanton, Nelson, all started to leave or retire, Cashman was clueless and could only go the high-priced free agent route. A fool who traded for Jose Canseco and had Joe Torre scratching his head.
Cashman is the definition of failing upwards.

Francessa said it on the radio 20 years ago, "da formuler ta put butts in da seats, is not the formuler to win a championship....back afta dis."

Thank you for putting it so eloquently. This has always been the case. Once he had to do maintenance on the championship core it all fell apart. Not a coincidence they won just 3 playoff series in 7 years from 2002-08. Even the free agent signings were more Steinbrenner than cashman. Giambi and Mussina come to mind. He also had very little to do with the Alex Rodriguez trade and wanted to let him walk after 2007. The most egregious examples were his handling of the pitching staff. Go look at the 2007 lineup, especially with the years Jeter, Jorge, and Rodriguez had and then ask how bad the pitching had to have been to only win 94 games. After going to the World Series in 2003 he lets 2 of the top 3 pitchers in the rotation walk in free agency and doesn’t get anyone to replace them. They had a lot of years with no starter posting an ERA below 4.00 on the year. Andy is still the last starter to become a viable long term guy who was drafted and developed in house. The 3 closest guys to home grown star pitchers since 1998 are Phil Hughes, Joba, and Severino. That’s just sad.

Watching
Gene and Bob made the Dynasty Teams, brian just had the job of keeping it together once they started really winning with George telling him what to do. I think him and Randy worked together to take over once George started to decline.

I have no sympathy for Judge

He should've left. Or wait until significant moves were made

He had all the leverage during the winter to seriously change the franchise for the better. And he chose the safe route.

Now he has to deal with this train wreck

He left $80 million on the table for this and it’s clear Hal lied to him about his plans for 2023 and beyond. He needs to speak up now. 21-22 guys on this roster are expendable. Him and Cole need to act. He absolutely should’ve known to use his leverage to force change last winter.

I wanna apologize to Robinson Cano. I used to criticize him for being a litte "too cool for school" at times.

But he hit AND fielded at a high level. He more than made up for it

I'm online, and I see Gleyber make yet another error, trying to be casual with the throw.

If Cano was only a slightly above average hitter, a mediocre defensive player, and had terrible baseball instincts, he'd be Gleyber

I'm sorry, I don't like his game at all. Ship his ass outta here this offseason.
