I think I’ve come to the conclusion that exclusives don’t matter

I asked this before, but how did Microsoft go from Xbox/Xbox 360 to what they have now? Halo, Gears, Forza, and Fable were all heavy hitters from what I understand. What happened?
Outside of Forza the other 2 franchises changed developers and weren’t as well received with their new developer. Gears has faired better than Halo but post Bungie Halo went from the premiere FPS on consoles to upper mid pack. 343 hasn’t found their footing with the Halo franchise.

Also you need more than 3 big franchises to hold it down of franchise fatigue will set in.

They still trying to push Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable. Those series didn't have anything new to show past the third iteration.

Sony got new IPs or reinvented them.

M$ was also too greedy to just post that they had new games. Sea of Thieves, Grounded and Halo were all released in incomplete forms. By the time they were fully developed one cared.
M$ should've held them till this year. I've never saw a Grounded or Sea of Thieves commercial or promo.

I feel they're going to fukk it up with Redfall also.
Redfall was announced and everyone thought it was a Left 4 Dead clone when it's more Far Cry.

They're obviously going a different direction than Sony but they are messing it up.

Except GamePass. They knew how to just throw money at finished projects. I think that's how they got Halo in the first place.

Exclusives only matter to broke boys and kids without jobs who can't get Mom and Dad to buy both consoles. :yeshrug:

They selling a lot of them. If they didn’t have the S they’d be even further behind.

Layoffs left and right. Games flopping, studios closing, games being shut down. Economy still fukked and getting worse. Inflation still bad.

A cheap console was smart/lucky business. especially considering all of this economic turmoil was spurred by an unpredictable worldwide pandemic and a war that no one believed would happen.

Gamepass and series S the best things xbox got gojng right now from a business standpoint :ehh:

Sony stans :mjlol:

PS5 is still selling slower than PS4. Xbox Series is selling Faster than X1.

PS5 is only selling slower because the stock has been horrible up until last summer. I will be glad to let you know when ps5 overtakes ps4 though, which again is a much bigger deal than you make it seem considering the ps4 sold 117m units.

And its a much closer gap between the ps5 and ps4 than it is the ps5 and xbox series

And xbox selling faster than a console that sold 50 million isn’t a flex. I’m also pretty sure it’s falling behind X1 also.

I don't get how exclusives would be a strong way to persuade someone to purchase 1 system over the other. I would think there'd be more important factors

Like what? What else would a gaming system need to sell more than another gaming system besides software?

Most of the software isn't exclusive. I guess the main factor, specifically for online gaming would be friends, but most that's not something the companies can control, but I feel like not enough games in general are exclusive for that to be a big factor.

So if 90% of the games are the same, if you had to choose between two consoles what else is there to decide upon?

The “play where your friends play” is a ripple effect of the exclusive games, because while 5 people may not care 1 person bought their ps5 for cod and spider-man (or any other first party game), and told another person thats where they’re playing COD.

Microsoft spent 7 billion dollars on Bethesda and theyre getting 3 exclusives out of them this year. You think Microsoft is even in any type of conversation if Hi Fi Rush, Redfall, and Starfield wasn’t on the table this year?

I guess it makes sense, but like if we didn't play COD, we'd be still playing Apex or Fortnite. Fifa, madden, and 2k, which most of us play online are on either console. I feel like I'd play the exclusives based on the console I had, rather than buy the console to play the exclusives. I guess for now, we're locked into playstation, because we've all always had playstations.

But like you said all those games are on both systems, so if im in the store looking at the shelf and gotta choose, the only differentiation is “what games can’t i play on the other console” and even then a lot of those games have cross play now so that doesn’t even matter.

Theres just no way to downplay what having a good first party line up does for brand awareness. the last of us show is going to increase it even more, people want big award winning games and sony puts out about 3 to 4 every year. So does Nintendo.

The heads of Microsoft know it too, which again is the reason they have been buying so many companies.

And the last part you mentioned is also true we’ve always had playstations, but for the same reason, exclusives. Before they were mostly 3rd party exclusives, from capcom, squaresoft, konami, rockstar, etc. the only difference is now we still get all those games on playstation on top of sonys own studios making AAA award winning games.
