These were probably toned down and made semi serious, whereas now, they are more broad, is my take.

Saw this in theaters, July 1998. Took is 100% serious as a 12 year old.

What about them? Most of them are heavy on Sci-Fi elements and fantasy. Not the same as 'real world' action/adventure.

They still fall under “dumb action.” Same with the Transformers. These movies are still out there. Disaster movies like 2012 and San Andreas are the same.

Most of these movies fail because they dont bother to make you want to root for the protagonist.

But good luck OP,the new craze is movies that dont have a clear ending and give no closure
