Um, Bethesda is notorious for being world building first, story second. Basically your exploration effects how the story goes which gives you alot of gameplay but sometimes can turn people off with tedious or pointless quest. Then you have alternatives to that like Witcher and Mass Effect, which focus more on how the story effects the world around you.

Skyrim, oblivion and New Vegas all have good stories. They have different factions you can join with their own stories too (the dark brotherhood, thieves guild, etc.). Fallout 4 didn't do it right and I think that's clouding judgment. Fallout 4 was a checklist game and didn't score nearly as high as other Bethesda games (it was in the mid 80s, unlike skyrim and oblivion which were in the 90s). I was disappointed with the story in Fallout 4. But not all Bethesda games are like that. Fallout 4 catered to the fps crowd more than the RPG crowd. I didn't like that decision and I hope they don't continue it with future games (elder scrolls being the likely next Bethesda wrpg)

Even bioware kinda fukked up with the story in DA:I. I don't like the trend, but luckily CD Projekt blessed us with a story rich open world WRPG with Witcher 3. Mass effect is another great series with a good story (minus the third's ending).

Basically, Fallout 4 fukked up, but that's just one game. Don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch.

I think part of the problem is how people play them. no one wants to "role play". they just want to treat it like a mission checklist... and then complain about that

Agreed :francis: ....as mentioned in the initial post.

Now to be fair: :whoa:
They are obviously designed to be that way and alot of it could be an issue with my expectations more so then execution of WRPG's. If you have an active imagination and spin your own personal tale within the sand box they give you then you can get a lot of mileage out of them(which is how I play them).

I feel like both Bethesda and Bioware started with the basic pen and paper AD&D then went two ways.
1. Bioware focused on combat rule sets and being a digital DM"Dungeon master" making campaigns(stories) for players to slog through.
2. Bethesda focused on the more abstract idea of choices/openness trying to digitize that aspect by throwing a bunch of options at the proverbial wall. So that players have the range of choices inherent to playing by pen & paper ....but now on the computer.

So maybe their(Bethesda) case *and developers like them* ......is of being a shytty "DM" :ehh::yeshrug:

what other western rpg games are worth playing outside of fallout and elder scrolls?
Dragon age 1 and 3, Mass Effect series, Witcher 2 and 3, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, divinity original sin (so I've heard), Wasteland 2 (so I've heard), Pillars of Eternity (so I've heard), Jade Empire.

Basically anything Bioware too (I know I'm missing something)

The narrative and the structure of open world games always have a huge disconnect that makes 0 sense in the context of the world.

Its a huge glaring flaw in the way theyre designed.

The worlds about to end they need my help urgently :ohhh:

But first let me collect 250 orbs and help a bartender collect some fur. shyt is downright stupid.:mjlol:

Come on breh. The problem is your imagination. You just dont know how to role play to make collecting orbs fun. :troll:

Who cares that theirs only slight variation in the tasks and theyre nothing more than busy work to time pad. Role play breh. :troll: you can be a guy that likes doing menial tasks for small amounts of money.

Why complain about doing checklists made by lazy game design. Just role play and imagine youre playing a fun game. :troll:

I don't see how you say this. Fallout 4 was fallout 3 wit better controls to me.

What made it so bad compared to the other titles?
