Afro Latinos that embrace their African blood have a special place in my heart.

To be raised in a culture that says being Black is bad and you have the option to throw that identify in the bushes--and you still don't?:banderas::salute:

Lol I be saying the same.......I've met Afro Latinos that are the color of Wesley Snipes saying I'm not black I'm Latino  :snoop:

To keep it 100, a lot of people think "Black" is Black American. We are the only people that have had our history effectively destroyed so we don't have a country to identify with, so we have to identify as our skin color. That's why some African immigrants don't like to be called Black because they have a nationality, we effectively do not.

Obviously these people are Black, but in their minds it means AFAM. Which is why they say I'm Latino, which is a culture with many races.

The thing is black has a negative connotation and black American sounds even worse because of the false stereotypes spread about black Americans. So people know the hierarchy in America. They come in saying, "OMG I'm not black. Don't compare me to those savages"

I disagree that black has a negative connotation.

:francis:Of course not all Dominicans are self-hating. People project based on those that run their mouth the most.
Black is a color, nothing more. African roots abound. Its usually other black people trying to be inclusive to folks who don't want that.

People clamoring to include those that have little to no African ancestry or people who don't want to be considered black. What good does that bring to the black collective? Let's talk about those who are black and want to progress the black collective. Hats off to the breh in the op...but D.R is crossed off my list for places to visit.I'd rather go to HAITI than that place.

Lol I'm just being honest Raul. You probably don't identify as black do you? Hell you can't even pass for black. You're probably 1/16th at best anyway so what I'm saying doesn't apply to you. It is what it is man. I'm not really focused on those who don't identify with the black struggle or think they're not black. That's fine. I'm not here to shame people into being black. I got too much pride for that.
Blacks need to be selective not inclusive. I don't claim someone black just cause they got curls in their hair. One of my favourite French writers: Alexandre Dumas was technically a quarter black his father was a mulatto from Haiti. I don't consider him black but it makes for interesting history.

I don't know what you experienced, but I saw this and still see it to this day. I knew a lot of Dominicans that would say, "I'm not black, I'm Hispanic". Now if you ask them about their white side they would be more than happy to elaborate. I knew a Dominican chick last semester who is clearly black, and has the body of a black woman. Anyways she would always say that she is not black, but Dominican. At the same time she would be quick to let you know of her Russian ancestry. :francis:
And these are the people that some blacks are clamoring or shame into blackness. Lol!!! I don't waste my time or entertain people like that...people ask me what Tiger Woods is and I say he's cablinasian. My mom calls him black all the time, I say let his cablinasian ass go!!

This what im saying. It is especially irritating because what being black means to African Americans is different from what Dominicans would consider it.
Instead of looking at it that way, people go all the way off on them for not "embracing blackness." I'm positive nobody is trying to get people like
Jesse Williams to claim black. This umbrella of inclusiveness doesn't work the way people are trying to make it work.

I have noticed that AA love shaming latinos-mainly Dominicans to claim a black identity that they don't want or identify with. That energy would be better served dealing with self haters and those who drag the AA collective down and to progress as a cultural group than trying to shame other groups with an identity they have no interest in claiming. It just comes off as desperate. I am proud to be black and have been for a long time...my parents did not have to force me into this pride, it's natural. I have my frustrations with blacks as a race but at the end of the day I wouldn't want to be anything else. I say; pick like minded people.

P.S: Afro Cubans, Afro Venezuelans, Afro Brazlians, Afro Argentinians are the GOAT!!!!!!

Right. It is a mad slippery slope and if some folk got what they want, everyone would be claiming black. If people are upset about the media show
dumpy, overweight black women as the ideal, wait till "exotic" dominicans are alongside the mixed race folk being held up as "black."

Careful what you wish for. Can't force people to identify with something they are far removed from culturally.

In many ways, it is already exercised... due to the one drop rule embracers. If one can squint one eye and tilt our heads to find her black lineage than she is cast in black female roles. Inversely, there is still a distinction made between heavily mixed black men and black men but even black men are slowly being replaced by their more ''We are the World'' counterparts. Don't get me wrong, there are black Dominicans but if they do not embrace that identity collectively, why force it on them?

People not secure enough in themselves to let people live the way they want. The way folks get upset at others not embracing their heritage is funny to me.
Anyone with real pride don't have to constantly reach out to make new allies of people who clearly don't fukk with it like we do.
