You have to understand "blackness" is a mostly American construct. The blackest newa in Africa doesn't call himself black. He's Sudanese or igbo, etc.

Um.....Dominican is a nationality. I have met white Dominicans, so I know that there are Dominicans that are white, but there are also MANY Dominicans with black ancestry. Many that I have met do not like to acknowledge their black ancestry but will be quick to tell you about their European ancestry. That's like me saying, "I'm not black...I'm Nigerian."

Not exactly. The vast majority of Dominicans are multi-racial and they choose to identify as their Nationality rather than their racial make-up.

Having African ancestry doesn't make you black. Adriana Lima and Wentworth Miller both have African ancestry and no one with any commonsense is going to call them black.

I have a problem with self hate too, but for them to self hate, they would need to deny African roots. They would have to deny what they are in THEIR culture.

These people just can't or don't see the relevance in history more than 1 generation removed. There's no connection they can't feel it.

Perhaps they want to be their own, new tribe, type ish. It's a lot of work to acknowledge African heritage and then have to research it. Though as you suggest, many saw commercials on television of big head Ethiopian and wanted no part of that heritage...ignorance.

Theres people with 1/4 African blood telling us theyre Black, but a dominican that looks straight Angolan says he isn't? How do you even tolerate being around that level of thinking? The one dominican I was cool with was straight, but also had that 'spain is everything' at times..

They did the same to the Mexicans. Got them thinking they're Hispanic and not Aztec.
